A church whose current west portal was built between 1540 and 1543, and a geological area where a river capture can be identified in detail, offer two clearly distinct ways to explore Torrejón del Rey. Local festival traditions and walking routes round out the picture. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up architectural history, geological landscapes and festive customs.
Church and architectural history
The Iglesia de San Julián y Santa Basilisa has been designated a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 8 July 1992. Its architectural history can be traced through several specific features. The current west portal was built by Pedro de la Bodega between 1540 and 1543. The nave was added to an existing tower, which served as a bell tower at the time.
Two distinct clues help establish the chronology: the tower was already there when the nave was added, while the west portal can be specifically linked to Pedro de la Bodega and the period from 1540 to 1543. If you are interested in architecture, the church offers a clear point of reference in the town's history.
Geology and walking routes
The “Captura fluvial del Camarmilla por el Torote” area lies within the municipality of Torrejón del Rey and is of geomorphological interest. The river capture can be identified both at a very small scale and in detail. To appreciate it, therefore, it is not just the geological formation that matters, but also how clearly it can be identified at these two scales.
The access route is clearly described: a road leads north from the N-320 at kilometre 305.5. From there, you can observe and explore the entire area on foot. Check local conditions on the unpaved road before your visit.
Apart from this geological area, Torrejón del Rey also has natural spaces and trails suitable for walking in accessible surroundings. Alongside the specifically named geological site, more general opportunities for walking are another option during your stay.
Festivals and local traditions
The Cofradía de la Virgen de la Virgen de las Candelas organizes La Rueda every year. During the tradition, participants walk through the streets of the municipality together with musicians. Going from house to house, they collect various products, objects and gifts in wicker baskets. After the Mass in honour of the deceased members of the brotherhood, the collected items are auctioned in the Plaza Mayor in front of the church.
The Fiesta de la Cruz de Mayo is also one of the local celebrations in Torrejón del Rey. A procession was planned for the 2026 celebrations in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Socorro. The specific events may vary from one edition to the next.
The distinction is useful for understanding the timing: La Rueda is organized every year, while the procession for the Santísimo Cristo del Socorro is tied to the programme of the 2026 celebrations. This separates a recurring tradition from an event specifically associated with 2026.
