Campillo de Ranas combines a village landscape shaped by slate with hiking trails offering a variety of destinations and formats. The PR-GU 01 leads from Campillo de Ranas to Pico Ocejón; another named trail is a five-kilometre round trip between the hamlet of Robleluengo and the ruins of a former grain mill in Majaelrayo. There is also architectural heritage and a model museum. You can shape your stay around the village landscape, regional architecture and specific hiking destinations.

Slate architecture and local details

Campillo de Ranas is one of the best-preserved villages of the Arquitectura Negra: slate shapes its houses, walls, roofs and paving. The parish church of Santa María Magdalena introduces a contrast in materials: black slate slabs on the tower are combined with limestone in various shades. The sundial Reloj Solar is located on the façade of the former rectory. Roble Hueco is also considered a symbol of Campillo de Ranas; its age is unknown.

Architecture in miniature and in a broader context

The Museo de Maquetas Roizo, also known as the Museo de Maquetas de Campillo de Ranas, displays miniature models of notable buildings and traditional occupations from the comarca of the Arquitectura Negra. The models use characteristic regional materials such as slate and dark stone. The architectural heritage can thus be seen at two scales: in the village, slate shapes houses, roofs and paving, while the collection presents regional buildings in miniature and also includes traditional occupations. Buildings and occupations appear side by side, so the focus is not only on architectural forms but also on traditional work.

The broader setting is the Ruta de los Pueblos Negros de Guadalajara: Campillo de Ranas forms its backbone in the Parque Natural Sierra Norte de Guadalajara. Here, you can encounter black architecture both in the village landscape and as the theme of a wider route.

Hiking trails by destination and stage format

The named hiking trails differ in their destinations and layouts. The PR-GU 01 leads from Campillo de Ranas to the 2,049-metre-high Pico Ocejón. The GR 60 focuses on a stage route: its first stage links Tamajón with Campillo de Ranas via Campillejo, El Espinar and Roblelacasa. The local trail network also includes the fifth stage of the GR 60, from Campillo de Ranas to Majaelrayo. For your choice, this means a clear distinction: the PR-GU 01 names a summit as its destination, while the GR routes highlight stages and intermediate villages.

The SL-GU 03 follows a different format. This five-kilometre round trip connects the hamlet of Robleluengo with the ruins of the former grain mill in Majaelrayo. The five-kilometre distance refers to the round trip; its destination is a historic site with a clearly stated function. This makes it possible to classify this route by different criteria from a hike whose destination is a summit or whose course is described through stages and intermediate villages.

Pico Ocejón is also a viewpoint destination: the Mirador de la Fuente de las Ranas offers a view of the mountain. The same landmark thus serves two distinct roles—as the destination of the PR-GU 01 and as the subject of the view from the mirador.
