The Ruta de los Oficios gives your stay in Alcoroches a clear focus on hiking, covering around 12 kilometres and taking approximately two and a half to three hours. There are also pine and oak landscapes, seasonal cycling offers and a long-standing mountain cuisine. This lets you experience nature, outdoor activities and local food culture as different sides of the area.
Landscape and Wildlife
Scots pine dominates the pine zone around Alcoroches. Beneath its canopy grow holm oaks, Pyrenean oaks, ferns and rockroses. The landscape changes to the southwest of the village: there are areas where juniper, creeping juniper, juniper shrubs, gorse, thyme and low-growing vegetation predominate. The remaining oak forest is concentrated around Fuente de la Carrasca and its surroundings. The pine zone, low-growing vegetation and oak forest therefore represent distinct landscape areas.
Wildlife is also part of the natural character of the forests and fields. The presence of large mammals has increased considerably there; these include deer, fallow deer and wild boar. They find peace, cover and food in this habitat. This information describes the wildlife in the surrounding area, not a specific opportunity to see animals on any one route.
Hiking the Ruta de los Oficios
The Ruta de los Oficios is about 12 kilometres long and takes approximately two and a half to three hours. One of its stops is the Barranco de la Hoz, a place sheltered from the northerly wind that people visit for walks on cold days. The route follows the road to TraĂd; after leaving Alcoroches, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is along the way. There is also a monument to the villages of the Mancomunidad de la Sierra in an oak forest associated with the route.
The gorge, hermitage and monument offer different points of interest along the route, beyond the trail itself. If you plan to hike it, take local conditions into account: trail conditions can vary by season. The stated duration provides a time frame, while conditions on the ground remain decisive for your specific plans.
Nature Spots and Cycling Offers
Fuente del Angosto is about two kilometres from Alcoroches, in a pine forest. It has tables and other facilities, making it suitable for a day in nature. This destination differs from the Ruta de los Oficios, for which both an approximate distance and duration are given: here, the forest setting and available facilities are the main features. Seasonal fire regulations may change; check the current rules before your stay.
Alcoroches en Ruta, an initiative launched by the Ayuntamiento de Alcoroches, offers electric bicycle hire and roadbooks in spring and summer. Confirm the rental period and availability before travelling. Through its Wikiloc profile, the initiative also offers outdoor routes for hiking, running, trekking and mountain biking, suitable for different ability levels. Take local conditions and rules into account when planning. Bicycle hire and outdoor routes thus broaden the options beyond the signposted hiking route, without implying that they share a trail.
Mountain Cuisine and Festive Traditions
Traditional mountain cuisine in Alcoroches includes migas, gachas, garlic soup and potatoes. A distinctive local dish is Galianos, also called Hartatunos: an omelette whose main ingredients are potatoes and bread. Depending on how it is prepared, peppers and rabbit meat may also be added. Traditional festive pastries include mantecados, Magdalenas, Dormidos and Tortas de anĂs. The dishes and pastries showcase different aspects of local food culture, from everyday mountain fare to food served at celebrations.
For Currutaje, the entire village gathers in the Plaza Mayor. Each family brings bread, a table, chairs and an empty botija, and waits for beef and wine. The shared meal is shaped both by the way it unfolds and by the items people bring. If you would like to plan a trip around this festival, check the relevant programme before making plans.
