Albendiego brings together the Hermitage of Santa Coloma, a cultural route through the Sierra Norte and trails along the Bornoba. Santa Coloma is less than 400 metres from the town centre, yet lies in a secluded landscape of groves and fields. This makes it possible to plan a trip that combines a historic building, a river valley and hiking trails, while recognising that each offers a different experience.

Santa Coloma: History and Architecture

The Hermitage of Santa Coloma was part of a former monastic complex associated with the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. A community is documented there as early as the late 12th century. The site's history therefore reaches back to a time when the churches and hermitages of the Ruta del Románico Rural were developing.

A distinctive architectural detail of Santa Coloma is its central apse. It has three round-arched windows framed by archivolts resting on columns with vegetal capitals. The stone tracery features openwork shapes such as stars, circles, triangles and rosettes. The different motifs can be viewed individually in the windows: arches, columns and capitals form the frame, while the tracery adds geometric and plant-inspired shapes.

Albendiego is part of the Ruta del Románico Rural, which links various Romanesque churches and hermitages across the Sierra Norte. The churches on this cultural route date from the late 12th to the early 13th century and show a marked Mudéjar influence. Visitors interested in architectural history can therefore connect Santa Coloma with a broader regional theme: the churches' historical context and the interplay of Romanesque and Mudéjar features.

Bornoba Valley, Mill and Landscape

Albendiego lies in a broad valley along the Bornoba, characterised by dense groves and lush vegetation. Santa Coloma is also by the river, surrounded by trees and fields. The landscape is therefore not merely a backdrop to the cultural route, but an integral part of the area's character.

The Molino del Callejón is one of the landmarks associated with the trails around Albendiego. It is considered the oldest mill in Spain whose entire machinery has been preserved. The cascades of its millrace can be seen among the groves. Further upstream from the Molino is a recreational area that combines ethnographic features with slate construction. The mill, watercourse and building techniques offer different ways to discover the historical and landscape character of the area.

Hiking the GR® 167

The GR® 167 provides specific information for planning a hike. Its first stage, through the municipalities of Prádena de Atienza, Albendiego, Condemios de Abajo and Condemios de Arriba, is 24.25 kilometres long. It is a linear route that runs in one direction only and is rated as moderate in difficulty. This information helps you weigh up the distance, route layout and difficulty together; its linear layout differs from a circular route that returns to the starting point.

The GR® 167 between the Sorbe and Bornova is listed as 50.1 kilometres in total, with two variants. Along the route, 95 per cent of the distance is on tracks or paths, and 85.5 per cent runs through the natural park. The stage length and the figures for the entire route describe different scales. Check the latest route details before setting out, as route information may change.

Festivals and Getting There

The patron saint festivities in honour of Santa Coloma take place on the last Sunday in January. Another event in the regional calendar is the Romería del Santo Alto Rey de la Majestad, held on the first Saturday in September on the 1,852-metre-high summit of Alto Rey. Pilgrims include people from Albendiego, who climb to the hermitage there. If you plan to time your trip around either date, confirm it locally in advance.

For road directions along the Ruta del Románico Rural, the route runs from Guadalajara via the CM-101 and CM-1001 to Cogolludo. It then follows the CM-1006 towards Galve de Sorbe, Villacadima, Campisábalos, Albendiego, Atienza and Carabias. The sequence of roads and towns provides a regional overview for navigation; check road conditions locally before travelling.
