Barajas De Melo offers several ways to explore the town’s history and landscape: the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista with its distinctive portal, sites associated with Fermín Caballero, recurring festivals, and the Donace recreation area. When planning a trip, you can choose between architectural history, local traditions, and an excursion to the source of the Río Calvache.

The church and traces of Fermín Caballero

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. One notable feature is its Gothic-Plateresque portal: cylindrical columns frame the ogee arch. Inside, the church is also furnished with a baptismal font belonging to the Count of Montesclaros. Its construction period, portal design, and baptismal font give the town a distinct historical focus.

Several other sites are associated with Fermín Caballero. The Casa de Fermín Caballero is his birthplace. The palatial Palacete Fuente Alcázar dates from the 19th century and is privately owned. The Jardín del Cerro, which Fermín Caballero created in 1860 as a country retreat, is also privately owned.

The cultural center named after Fermín Caballero houses personal belongings, documents, and a selected bibliography. The Centro de Interpretación in Barajas De Melo has a different focus: it presents the area’s distinctive features and the way of life of its inhabitants, and has spaces for temporary exhibitions and workshops. Its cultural themes therefore range from Caballero’s biography to presentations of the town and its residents.

Festivals on set dates

The patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgen de la Vega take place around September 8. On September 8, the festivities include a solemn Mass and a procession. The traditional Encierros take place on September 9 during the festivities. If you are traveling specifically for a festival, check the event calendar for your visit.

Los Mayos also has a set date: the celebration takes place on April 30. Children decorate the Mayo tree in front of the church, sing the Mayo for the Virgen de la Vega, and light a fire in front of the church. These customs make Los Mayos a distinct event on the calendar, separate from the September festivities.

Donace and the source of the Río Calvache

Donace is a recreation area with a play area, picnic area, and barbecue grills. The Río Calvache rises there, in the eastern part of the municipality of Barajas De Melo. Donace thus combines a designated recreation area and the river’s source, though they serve different purposes: the facilities are for spending time in the area, while the source is a destination in its own right.

To reach the source, travel from Barajas De Melo along the CM-200 toward Albalate de Zorita. After two kilometers, a path branches off to the right and leads directly to the source. As path conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. The location and directions provide practical guidance without specifying a walking time or additional distances.

Routes and local cuisine

Two routes can also be distinguished by how they relate to the town: Stage 10 of the Camino de Uclés passes through Barajas De Melo. The La Sierra de Altomira route starts here but is not signposted. When planning, this is an important distinction between a stage that passes through the town and a route whose starting point is in Barajas De Melo.

Gachas is considered the most typical dish in the cuisine of Barajas De Melo. Together with the buildings, festival traditions, and landscape around Donace, this adds local cuisine to the picture of the town.
