The Lagunas de Cañada del Hoyo Natural Monument includes seven permanently water-filled karst lagoons. Hiking trails lead to different destinations, and there are also historic buildings and a contemporary art project. For planning, the access rules and specific trail routes are particularly useful.
Lagoons and Hiking Trails
There is a clear distinction between the lagoons: the first three are freely accessible, while the others are on the “7 leguas” estate. Check the local regulations before your visit. A hiking trail open to everyone leads to the most important lagoons in the natural monument. These include Laguna del Tejo, the deepest lagoon at 32 metres.
The PR-CU 83 Sendero de las Lagunas is four kilometres long and linear; it is classified as easy, with an estimated duration of one to two hours. It begins in Cañada del Hoyo, leads to Laguna del Tejo and returns to the village along the same route. Features along the trail include rest areas, interpretation areas, lagoons, panoramic views and geological points of interest. This makes it possible to enjoy several aspects of nature within a manageable time, without having to plan a different route for the return journey.
The PR-CU 88 starts at Castillo del Buen Suceso and follows the Camino de la Virgen. After connecting with the PR-CU 87, it returns to Cañada del Hoyo. The PR-CU 87 passes over the well-preserved Puente Molina, a bridge with a Romanesque arch on the former medieval route “camino real de Las Zomas a Cañada del Hoyo”. The trails therefore differ in their destinations and historical connections, ranging from the lagoons to a bridge on a former route.
Buildings and Culture
Castillo del Buen Suceso is privately owned; its exterior grounds are freely accessible. Rural paths lead from Cañada del Hoyo to the hill, with the final section covered on foot. Parts of the wall, the keep and the former courtyard remain. This information can help you factor the freely accessible exterior grounds and the visible structures into your plans.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves and the Ermita del Hoyo are each considered examples of the Serranía’s vernacular architecture. Both buildings offer a reason to take in the region’s architecture as well as its nature trails.
Kárstica Espacio de Creación opened in 2019 as a contemporary art space in the rural surroundings of Cañada del Hoyo. It is located in the former railway station. Its programme includes artist residencies, labs and workshops, as well as gatherings of artists. This offers a different cultural focus alongside the historic buildings, centred on artistic work and exchange.
The Centro Expositivo de Cañada del Hoyo explains how the Las Hoyas site was formed and presents the habitat of its predator. The centre is currently closed. Check its status before visiting.
Nearby, the Ermita de la Virgen de los Ángeles is set in scenic surroundings about five kilometres from Cañada del Hoyo.
