Vega De Pas combines a distinctive river landscape with Pasiego architecture. The headwaters of the Pas River meet in the town; mixed riverside forests of alders, ash trees, oaks and willows stretch along numerous waterways. Hiking trails lead through forest landscapes to hut areas and historic sites. Reviewing trail destinations and cultural themes can help you choose what to focus on during your stay.
Waterways and hiking trails
The PraderĂa de Ruyemas is a 5-kilometre hiking route along the Pandillo, one of the Pas’s headwater streams. The trail passes through a mixed deciduous forest and continues to the Ruyemas hut area. Its length, the stream and the destination offer concrete points of reference for planning this hike.
The PR-S75 Riberas del Yera y Ajan route has a different focus: it includes gallery-like alder and willow forests and passes through Vega De Pas’s town square. The route is fully signposted; check the trail markers on site. Corcus, a group of four connected huts, is located along the PR-S75. The GR-74 Corredor Oriental also has a stopover in Vega De Pas. The routes therefore offer different points of interest: the length and hut area at Ruyemas, the forest and town square on the PR-S75, and a stopover on the GR-74.
Pasiego architecture and history
Pasiego huts in Vega De Pas are buildings made of stone and masonry, with roofs of slate or stone slabs. They are associated with mobile livestock farming. This connection between building style and farming practices makes the huts a tangible example of Pasiego architecture.
The Museo Etnográfico de las Villas Pasiegas focuses on the customs of Vega De Pas, San Roque de Riomiera and San Pedro del Romeral. Items on display from the traditional life of the Pasiegos include everyday objects, tools, jugs and paneras. The museum also recreates almost in full the conditions inside a two-storey Pasiego hut. The collection, customs and hut construction thus offer different perspectives on the Pasiego way of life.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Vega dates back to 1697. Inside are three Gothic ribbed vaults. Another historical point of interest is the former railway line: after passing through three tunnels, you reach the former Yera passenger station. The La Engaña tunnel is described as the most significant structure of the former railway line in the Yera area.
