Selaya combines Pasiegos architectural heritage with a landscape shaped by meadows and huts. Cultural highlights include historic buildings, museums exploring local history and products, and the celebration of the Virgen de Valvanuz. When planning your trip, you can distinguish these highlights from the routes described through the landscape.
Architectural history and Pasiegos architecture
The Palacio de DonadĂo, also known as La Casa de la Colina, dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. A mighty defensive tower of medieval origin is incorporated into the building. This brings together two distinct periods in a single structure: the tower’s medieval origins and the palace’s later date.
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista also preserves historic furnishings: its five altarpieces date from the 18th century. At the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Valvanuz, various architectural elements create a contrast. The religious building is Romanesque and stands in a meadow at the foot of the San Bartolomé slope; its three-tiered Baroque bell gable is decorated with Herrerian motifs.
The Cubos and the Rollo Heráldico de Selaya are among the designated cultural heritage sites. They were recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the monument category on April 3, 2002. The architectural and historical spectrum thus ranges from individual building forms to protected monuments.
Museums, history and local products
The Museo de las Amas de CrĂa Pasiegas displays 300 photographs of wet nurses from 1880 to 1936, characteristic traditional costumes and a library. It is located in the Casa de la Beata next to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Valvanuz. The collection offers its own historical focus in the immediate vicinity of the religious building.
The Museo del Sobao Pasiego explores the traditions of the Valles Pasiegos and the origins and development of sobao and quesada. Ethnographic materials and historic equipment complement the subject, while a glassed-in area offers a view of the production process. Sobaos and quesadas pasiegos are also among the most important products of Selaya’s thriving food industry. Their story can therefore be explored through both their development and the objects and processes involved in making them.
Meadows, river source and routes
Selaya’s typical Pasiegos landscape is shaped by meadows and huts. Numerous Pasiegos hamlet clusters feature traditional stone enclosures. The RĂo Pisueña also has its source here. The Nacimiento del Pisueña route runs from the Pisueña neighborhood to the spring, passing groups of huts of ethnographic value and a landscape of enclosed meadows.
Another option is the 10-kilometer route to Los Picones de Sopeña: a moderately difficult ascent along the watershed between the Pas and Pisueña rivers. It runs from Alto de Caracol via Los Picones de Sopeña to Alto de la BraguĂa; along the way, views open up over the Carriedo Valley, the Miera Valley and Vega de Pas. In contrast, the Nacimiento del Pisueña route focuses on the river’s source and the cultural landscape of huts, while the route to Los Picones is described by its length, difficulty and named waypoints.
The GR-74 Corredor Oriental leaves Selaya via the Puente Piedra neighborhood, heading south toward Los Vaqueros and La Sierra. The routes described therefore differ in direction: to the source of the Pisueña, along the watershed, or south via Puente Piedra.
The celebration of the Virgen de Valvanuz
The celebration of the Virgen de Valvanuz on August 15 is recognized as a Fiesta de InterĂ©s TurĂstico Regional. The listed events include a procession of the Virgen on her triumphal float, competitions in Salto Pasiego and Jotas, displays of traditional costumes, and the Milla Urbana de Selaya sporting event. The program may vary from year to year; check the event dates before your trip if you would like to visit Selaya for the celebration.
Selaya offers several specific ways to choose a focus for your trip: historic buildings and museum collections, the connection between sobao and quesada and the local food industry, or paths through the Pasiegos landscape. If you include a route in your plans, the features described for each can help guide your choice; for the August celebration, the current event dates are essential.
