La Busta brings together archaeological traces, historic buildings, and a distinctive limestone landscape. When choosing what to explore, you can compare cave and landscape themes on the one hand with houses and religious buildings on the other. For the caves, protected status and archaeological traces are the main focus; the buildings can be distinguished by their periods, coats of arms, and altarpieces.

Landscape and Caves

A striking mass of limestone rises above the village; the limestone formations around La Busta have given rise to a network of caves. Cueva del Linar was designated an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1997. A protection order published in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) in 2005 also covers its protected surroundings, which extend into and across La Busta. The extent of this protected area thus establishes an explicit link between the cave and the village. A walk from La Mies to Cueva del Linar is recommended as a walking idea.

Cueva de los Avellanos offers a different archaeological perspective. Its gallery contains engravings of blunt-pointed tools, disconnected lines, and the outline of an animal; funerary remains from the Eneolithic period have also been found there. The cave has numerous entrances. These findings differ from those at Linar: at Avellanos, the focus is on engravings and funerary finds, while Cueva del Linar is also distinguished by its designation and protected surroundings.

Houses and Manor Houses

The traditional architecture can also be described in specific terms: the houses in La Busta, built in the Montañés style, retain balconies and courtyards with an arched gateway at the entrance. Two manor houses offer different historical highlights. Casa de los Gutiérrez Rivero was built and remodeled in the 18th century; it bears the coats of arms of the Gutiérrez, Celis, Rivero, and Pérez del Río families. Casa de Rivero y Bustamante is a renovated 17th-century manor house and retains the Rivero family coat of arms. The houses thus differ in their stated periods of construction and the coats of arms each retains.

Churches and Feast Day

The parish church of San Miguel appears to date from the 10th century and retains a small altarpiece in the Neoclassical style. The Ermita Santa Eulalia is located in the center of La Busta; its altarpiece is Baroque and has unpainted Solomonic columns. The columns are twisted and have no polychrome finish. Comparing the two churches reveals distinct features: at San Miguel, the possibly early date and the Neoclassical altarpiece stand side by side; at Santa Eulalia, the highlights are its central location and the Baroque altarpiece with its columns.

San Migueluco is celebrated in La Busta on May 8. If you plan to include this occasion in your trip, confirm the date for the year you wish to visit in advance.
