The church and grain mill give Santibáñez a strong cultural identity: the church dates from the 16th century, and the mill is over two hundred years old. The landscape of the municipality of Villacarriedo, along with equestrian sports and a mountain-bike circuit, add further points of interest.

A Church with Several Layers of History

The Church of San Juan Bautista de Santibáñez dates from the 16th century; its tower was completed in the 17th century. The original main altarpiece dates from the 18th century and has an almost circular entablature. The church building, tower and furnishings thus span three consecutive centuries. Both aspects are useful for understanding its architecture: the chronology of its components and the distinctive shape of the altarpiece.

Watermill on the Junquera

The Molino Harinero de Santibáñez grain mill is over two hundred years old and may be one of the largest and most sophisticated watermills in Cantabria. It is listed as an inventoried cultural asset in Cantabria’s General Inventory of Cultural Heritage. The mill is of the rodezno type and has a horizontal water wheel, powered by the Junquera River. A 2004 account described its inlet and outlet channels as being in good condition. In addition to its age and heritage status, the interaction between the water wheel, water source and channels is a key part of its technology.

Landscape in the Municipality of Villacarriedo

In the upper Pisueña basin of Villacarriedo, hay meadows dotted with Pasiego huts shape the landscape; numerous streams add to the municipality’s abundant rivers and fish. The course of the Pisueña through Villacarriedo is included in the Río Pas Site of Community Importance in the Natura 2000 network. The landscape thus brings together two elements: the hay meadows of the upper basin and the river course included in the Río Pas Natura 2000 site.

Equestrian Centre and Mountain-Bike Circuit

A 2017 association listing named the private Centro Ecuestre Santibáñez, run by Depolur, S.L., at Barrio Villalaz 11, 39649 Santibáñez–Villacarriedo, Cantabria. It listed equestrian sports as its main activity, including lessons, competitions, riding camps and horse boarding. The range therefore extends from activities for riders to accommodation for horses. On the grounds, beside the Pisueña and Junquera rivers, there is a riding and galloping track about 1 km long and an average of 5 m wide, reserved exclusively for horses. If you are planning a specific activity there, check current operations, services and access before setting off.

The mountain-bike route “Santibáñez – Vuelta al valle del Pisueña” is separate: it is a circuit starting and ending in Santibáñez de Carriedo. As the navigation data comes from a route description published by a user, check it before setting off.

A Look at the History of Education

The history of education also adds to the cultural picture. The school in Santibáñez de Carriedo was funded by Francisco Pérez Venero in 1927. Its facilities at the time included educational materials and complementary services in keeping with modern educational trends. The village’s history thus extends beyond religious architecture and milling technology to include the history of 20th-century education.
