Puente Viesgo combines a striking limestone landscape with archaeological traces and routes through the surrounding area. Monte Castillo is a cone-shaped limestone hill on the River Pas near Puente Viesgo. So planning a trip here is about more than cave visits: the climb towards the summit, museum visits, and a restored section of the former railway line offer different ways to explore the area.

Cave Art and Visiting Times

El Castillo Cave contains more than 275 Paleolithic figures; it is also home to rock art that is at least 40,800 years old. Visits are guided and last approximately 45 minutes. As visits are guided, check the current visiting schedule before your trip so you can take this into account when planning.

Las Monedas offers a different focus: the section open to visitors covers about 160 metres of its total 800-metre length. The cave contains stalactites, stalagmites, discs, columns, hanging terraces, and colourful mineral deposits. It also features at least 17 animal figures, as well as various signs and groups of lines that are difficult to interpret. Las Monedas thus brings geological formations together with Paleolithic depictions, while El Castillo stands out for the number of its figures and the dating of its rock art.

The Alberto I de MĂłnaco Cave Art Centre of Cantabria provides an introduction to Paleolithic rock art. If you would like to learn about this subject beyond the motifs found in the caves, you can include the centre as a separate stop on your itinerary. This gives you a choice of cave visits or an introduction at the centre to explore rock art.

Routes and Local History

The path up to Pico Castillo begins in the La Llana neighbourhood of Puente Viesgo. It leads to an early medieval archaeological site associated with the fortress that gave the mountain its name. The route to the summit offers elevated views of Puente Viesgo, the surrounding valley, and the Pas mountains. The climb therefore combines a specific historical destination with views across the landscape.

Another historical landmark in the town is the parish church of Puente Viesgo. It is Neo-Romanesque and includes the former Chapel of San Miguel. The former railway station is now a small museum. Together, these places complement the caves and the early medieval archaeological site with other aspects of local history, each with its own focus.

If you would like to explore on foot or by bicycle, you can consider the restored section of the former railway line between Puente Viesgo and the neighbouring village of Soto Iruz (Santiurde de Toranzo). This offers a different route option from the climb to Pico Castillo: here, the route is described for walking or cycling, while the summit path and archaeological site are the main focus there.

A Thermal Touch

The thermal station at Balneario de Puente Viesgo is connected to the hotel and surrounded by a large natural park. This adds another aspect to the destination alongside its caves, routes, and historical sites. If you plan to include this thermal experience in your stay, check the current services and access options in advance.
