For a trip to Mazcuerras, you can plan around nature, culture and ways of getting around, based on specific places and conditions. Parque El Bosque is known for its riverside vegetation and wildlife; literary connections and dated buildings add a cultural perspective. When it comes to routes, your options depend on whether you plan to walk or travel by vehicle, or use a crossing intended for pedestrians and cyclists.

Riverside Vegetation and Wildlife

Parque El Bosque features riverside vegetation, including alders, poplars and willows. Wildlife in the park includes otters and herons. This gives nature lovers two different points of interest in the same place: the trees along the riverbank and the animals found in the park. By including both in your plans, you can explore more than just the landscape.

Culture Through Different Periods

The Bolera de Mazcuerras is still in use and hosts competitions and federated events. ASELART, the rural art gathering, follows a different rhythm: it takes place every summer in July and August as an open-air museum. ASELART is therefore a clear seasonal highlight when planning your trip. If you want to include the gathering in your plans, visit in July or August and check the specific event dates in advance.

Luzmela and Historic Buildings

Mazcuerras is also known as Luzmela. The name is linked to Concha Espina’s novel “La niña de Luzmela” and to the place where the writer lived. This literary connection offers a distinct way to explore local cultural history and is not tied to ASELART’s summer program. Architectural points of interest include the Ermita de San Roque in Plaza de Concha Espina, which dates from the 17th century. Near the bowling alley, you can also find an example of a traditional rural house from the early 19th century, dated 1828. Literary connections and architectural history thus offer different perspectives on Mazcuerras.

Routes and Getting Around

The Ruta de los Foramontanos passes through Mazcuerras as a cultural route and can be completed on foot or by vehicle. It then continues to Cos. This gives you a clear choice of how to get around when planning: you can travel the route on foot or by vehicle.

The historic Camino Real is another point of interest for walkers. Numerous sections in the Mazcuerras area are currently accessible on foot. If you plan to follow this route, check the current status of the walkable sections before setting out. After about three kilometres, a path reaches the “El Bosque” recreation area near Mazcuerras.

The Pasarela sobre el RĂo Saja is located in the vicinity of Mazcuerras. It is intended exclusively for pedestrians and bicycles; other vehicles are not permitted to cross it. The difference in travel options compared with the Ruta de los Foramontanos is clear: the latter can also be completed by vehicle, but the Pasarela cannot.

The Regional Setting

Mazcuerras is part of the Mancomunidad Reserva del Saja. Its visitor offerings include natural areas, cultural heritage, hiking and mountain biking routes, and recreation areas. This regional context complements the local highlights with further opportunities to enjoy nature, culture and leisure. Your trip can therefore focus on different things: the seasonal art event, literary and architectural history, or a choice between the different route options.
