Cahecho is known as the “Balcony of Liébana” because of the panorama visible from there. The landscape is a striking starting point when choosing a destination. Alongside the distant views, trails, forest habitats and an archaeological site offer further, clearly distinct interests for travellers. Cahecho can therefore be described in more ways than just through a viewpoint: a short walk, a route through Monterey pine forest and a specific place to eat all provide different starting points for planning.
Panoramas with Clear Points of Reference
The Cahecho viewpoint is 846 metres above sea level and is also known as “El Mirador de Los Picos de Europa”. From Cahecho, the view stretches across the Liébana valley, the Cantabrian Mountains and the Picos de Europa. The description “Balcony of Liébana” and the viewpoint’s name strike different notes: one evokes the valley, while the other explicitly names the Picos. Together, they frame the view both regionally and in terms of the specific viewpoint. If you like to plan destinations around clearly identified landscape features, you will find both here.
Two Trails, Different Landscapes
A short walk from Cahecho leads to Collado de Taba. From there, views open up over the Cillorigo valley and the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. This is a different perspective from the panorama over Liébana: at the pass, Cillorigo and the eastern mountains take centre stage.
Another route starts in Cahecho and leads to the Ermita de San Tirso. Its path through a forest of Monterey pines sets it apart from the walk to the pass; along the route, you can see the eastern side of the Picos de Europa and the Liébana valley. There are therefore different features to consider when choosing: the short walk with views of Cillorigo and the eastern massif, or the San Tirso route with its pine forest and panorama over Liébana. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
Forests and Archaeological Traces
On the sunny slope between Frama and Cahecho, the landscape includes cork oak forests where short-toed snake eagles breed. This adds a specific forest habitat to the distant views. An archaeological site of the “castrense” type is also located in an oak forest near Cahecho. It brings a cultural and historical dimension to the surroundings. If you would like to include both nature and history in your travel plans, the forest habitat and archaeological site offer distinct themes.
A Meal at Casa Lamadrid
Casa Lamadrid is a specific dining option in Cahecho. The restaurant uses produce from its own livestock farm and vegetable garden in its dishes. Guests can have a drink on the terrace before or after their meal and enjoy the view. The ingredients used and the terrace with its view are therefore specific features to consider when choosing where to eat. Services and offerings may change; check the latest details before visiting.
