The Ría de Cubas gives Suesa a distinctive landscape: the village lies at the final stretch of the ria, where the Miera River meets the sea. Its well-preserved mosaic of marine and terrestrial habitats is part of the Natura 2000 network. This makes it possible to discover Suesa through both its landscape and its built heritage.

Habitats and activities along the ria

Grey herons and swans can be spotted in the ria’s sandy areas and reed beds. Such sightings are seasonal and variable, so birdwatching is a possible nature highlight but not a reliably schedulable activity. The Ría de Cubas is considered a river estuary of high ecological interest in Ribamontán al Mar. Canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) are possible on the water. Conditions and providers for canoe trips may vary, while tides and operational arrangements affect the practical use of SUP. Check the tides and the respective offerings before making specific plans.

Churches, monastery and architectural details

The present-day Church of Santa Eulalia dates from the late 16th century. Its single-nave layout, transept and polygonal apse give the building a clearly articulated form. The main altarpiece is a work by Juan Tolnado Herrera from the mid-17th century; its features include reliefs and some original carvings. The building thus brings together an older church structure and later altar furnishings as distinct historical layers.

The Trinitarian monastery was inaugurated on 19 April 1887. Its church contains a mid-17th-century altarpiece as well as a collection of Baroque paintings and sculptures. The El Ribero y Praderías route passes through Suesa, where the Trinitarian monastery can be visited. The monastery and its artworks provide another focus on religious architecture and art history, complementing the Church of Santa Eulalia.

Civic buildings also have details of their own: the manor house of the Cubas family bears the Cubas family coat of arms. On the north wall of the Presmanes family manor house is a Baroque sundial, considered one of the most richly decorated in Cantabria. A small chapel was part of the former San Lázaro Hospital of Teas. The hospital served as a leprosarium and pilgrims’ hostel on the Way of St James; this historical connection adds another dimension to local history alongside the churches and manor houses.

Choose routes by what they focus on

The Route de Entremieses passes through the rural settlements of Loredo, Suesa and Castanedo. El Ribero y Praderías also passes through Suesa and offers the opportunity to visit the Trinitarian monastery there. The routes therefore offer different points of interest: one passes through several rural settlements, while the other names the monastery as a place to visit. Your choice may depend on whether you want to include several places or focus on local heritage.

Choosing a hotel can therefore reflect what you would like to experience locally, without bringing the various offerings together into a fixed itinerary.
