Galizano combines a distinctive stretch of coastline with a history that spans from prehistoric times to the 20th century. At Playa de Galizano, open sea gives way to a large pool that forms at high tide; the town is home to buildings from different periods. Coastal trails, cycling routes and festivals also offer different ways to shape your trip. You can decide whether you want to discover Galizano mainly for its beach, landscape or history.

Beach, Tides and Surfing Coast

Playa de Galizano, also known as La Canal, is set in a rocky, vegetation-covered landscape. Fine golden sand and strong waves define the beach. At low tide, it opens out widely to the sea; at high tide, it turns into a large pool. Thanks to its sheltered setting, ria and pools, the beach is considered particularly suitable for families and children. Surfing is also possible there, though conditions depend on the sea. Tides and sea conditions are therefore useful guides when planning a beach visit. Beach conditions may change seasonally.

The coastline is also associated with surfing beyond this individual beach: Created in 2012, the Reserva Natural de Surf de Ribamontán al Mar was Spain’s first and Europe’s second surf nature reserve. It covers the entire coastal breaker zone between Somo-Loredo-Langre and Galizano. If you are planning to surf, check current conditions and beach access locally.

Coastal Trails and Cycling Routes

The Ruta de Cucabrera leads from Galizano along a path towards the beach and the coastal cliffs. The Cueva de Cucabrera is located there. Another way to explore the cliff landscape is the Ruta de Los Acantilados, which follows paths near the coast through a landscape shaped by cliffs. The beaches of Arenillas and La Canal are in this stretch of coastline.

The Ruta de Carril Bici connects Galizano and Somo along a broad road. The route is about five kilometres long and fully signposted. It differs from the BTT circular route in Ribamontán al Mar, which runs along the cliffs of Langre and Galizano. These descriptions identify two distinct cycling options: a signposted connection between Galizano and Somo, and a circular route along the cliffs. Check cycling route conditions locally.

Buildings and Traces of Local History

The Iglesia Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción, whose construction began in 1580, offers a glimpse of an early period in the town’s history. Its main entrance features Doric columns in a classical style. The house of master stonemason Pedro de la Cuesta dates from 1619. The Casa de Agustín del Pontón y Calderón de la Barca was built in the second half of the 17th century and stands beside a three-storey tower. The Casa de Calderón-Güemes and the Casona de Campo Velasco also date from the 17th century.

The Ermita de San PantaleĂłn stands on a hill. Three of its walls remain, and it was probably built before its first documented mention in 1642. The hermitage is a ruin, and access conditions may change. The Escuelas de Galizano were founded in the early 20th century. Together, these examples represent different periods without necessarily forming a single architectural ensemble.

Ceramics are also part of the town’s history. Archaeological sites containing ceramic fragments attest to human presence in Galizano since prehistoric times. In the 19th century, numerous workshops produced “a la cortesana” ceramics, continuing a craft tradition introduced by Fernández de Isla in the 18th century. These workshops are part of the town’s historical heritage.

Festivals in Galizano

San Isidro has been celebrated in Galizano as a traditional fair since 1940. It includes an exhibition and competition for Friesian cattle, as well as exhibitions of Cantabrian crafts, including ceramics and woodwork. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current dates and programme.

The San PantaleĂłn festival takes place on 27 July at the Ermita de San PantaleĂłn. It includes a solemn mass and a communal outdoor picnic. Here too, it is advisable to check the current programme and access conditions before your visit.
