Valle is considered a rural settlement with the typical characteristics of a mountain village in inland Cantabria. Two distinct focuses are available to help you plan your trip: historic buildings with specific architectural details, and a section of the Valle–Mentera-Barruelo route along the Río Asón. Depending on whether you would rather focus on architectural history or a riverside stretch, you can choose a different emphasis.

Palaces, a Chapel and Façade Details

The Palacio de Juan Fernández del Valle was completed in 1610. It is listed as an inventoried cultural asset in the General Inventory of Cantabria’s Cultural Heritage. This building therefore combines architectural history with formal cultural heritage status. The year 1610 provides a precise point of reference for comparing it with Valle’s other historic buildings.

The Palacio Zorrilla San Martín also dates back to the 17th century. It includes a chapel dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Rosario and San Nicolás de Bari. Here, the religious dedication takes centre stage; by comparison, the Palacio de Juan Fernández del Valle provides a specific point of reference with its completion in 1610. The palaces reveal Valle’s older architectural history from two different perspectives.

The Casa de Indiano de Federico Porres del Castillo was built in 1902 and has two façades decorated with verandas. It therefore dates from after the two 17th-century palaces. At the same time, the comparison shifts from construction dates and chapel dedications to façade design: the verandas are the architectural detail identified at this house.

The Escuelas de Valle were built around 1890. They currently serve as an interpretation centre for the Indianos and as the town’s cultural centre. Their present-day function distinguishes them from the palaces and the Casa: here, a historic building combines interpretation and cultural activities. If you plan to visit the Escuelas, check access and visiting arrangements in advance.

The chronology spans a broad period: the two 17th-century palaces are followed by the Escuelas, dating from around 1890, and the Casa, built in 1902. Valle thus features buildings from several periods, with details ranging from a chapel dedication to façades with verandas.

A Section Along the RĂo AsĂłn

The Valle–Mentera-Barruelo route begins in Valle beside the Iglesia de San Félix. Its first section follows the Río Asón riverside path and is about 1 km long. This distance refers to that section only. Unlike the buildings, the focus here is on the riverside path. If you are weighing up architectural history against a short walk during your stay, this offers a distinct and specifically described option.

El Milagro on 3 September

El Milagro is one of Valle’s local traditions and is celebrated on 3 September. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check that year’s programme in advance.
