A circular hike starting in Somahoz passes through Campo de la Cruz and Cueto Moroso before returning to the village. The 2018 route guide estimates the distance at around 13.1 kilometres. This distance can help you decide how to fit the hike into your stay. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The route passes the start of the Canal de las Tejeras section, two kilometres from Somahoz. The circular route also reaches the start of the Sendero Fluvial de la Canal de las Tejeras.
Watercourse and forest
The Sendero Fluvial de la Canal de las Tejeras runs alongside the watercourse and is designed for viewing waterfalls. The route also leads into a forest with native oaks, beech trees, hazels and holly, as well as occasional chestnut trees. The forest composition may change over time. The watercourse, waterfalls and named tree species provide several specific features to look out for in the natural landscape. When considering the character of your hike, you can distinguish the waterside section from the forest, rather than focusing only on the total distance.
Cueto Moroso: hillfort and views
A Cantabrian hillfort once stood at the summit of Cueto Moroso. There is a large collapse in the area of the fortification wall, while the wall remains standing at its original height in some places. A zigzag path paved with stones is another feature of the site, along with possible stone mounds. These different features offer insight into the site’s location and the condition of its wall. If you are interested in archaeological remains, Cueto Moroso is more than just a viewpoint on the circular route.
From Cueto Moroso, there are views to the west over the Valle de Cieza, with the Sierras del Cordel and Peña Sagra, and the Picos de Europa in the background. To the south, the view extends across the Valle de Iguña, with Ureño in the middle and Jano on the right. The directions reveal two distinct landscapes: the Valle de Cieza and the named mountain ranges to the west, and the Valle de Iguña with its two peaks to the south. This lets you identify the view using specific names and locations.
There are different interests to consider when choosing a focus for your hike: the watercourse and waterfalls along the Sendero Fluvial, or the summit, hillfort and views at Cueto Moroso. The circular route passes through Cueto Moroso and reaches the start of the Sendero Fluvial. You can decide in advance which of these landscape or historical features you would particularly like to explore during your visit.
La Magosta in Somahoz
La Magosta is a well-established tradition in Somahoz and one of the area’s most popular festivals. Chestnuts are sampled at La Magosta. This provides a local festival as another possible reason for a trip, alongside the hike. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the dates and current programme in advance; programme details may vary. This lets you consider the hike and the festival as different reasons to stay in Somahoz, without assuming a particular event date.
