Luriezo offers two concrete points of interest for a stay: a Cantabrian-Roman stele in the portico of the parish church and the circular route to the Ermita de la Luz. Together, they represent different points of emphasis—cultural history in the village and outdoor activity in the mountain landscape of Peña Sagra. Choosing Luriezo therefore lets you include both archaeological heritage and a specific hike in your plans.
The Stele, the Church and Regional Architecture
A Cantabrian-Roman stele has been preserved in the portico of the parish church. It is circular and made of sandstone, with a diameter of 1.35 m and a thickness of 20 cm. Its shape, material and measurements make this archaeological artefact tangible as a specific object.
The present-day church was built by Vicente Soberón in 1823, replacing an older 16th-century temple. The history of the church building and the stele, classified as Cantabrian-Roman, thus represent different historical points of reference. Luriezo’s buildings and the small gardens around them also represent the vernacular architecture of the Liébana region. This perspective extends beyond the parish church: the buildings and gardens that together embody regional architectural styles are also part of the village’s character.
Circular Route to the Ermita de la Luz
The 13.1 km circular route starts and ends in Luriezo and leads to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Luz. Its first half follows the GR-71, the Sendero de la Reserva del Saja. The stated distance is for the entire loop; the route overlaps with the GR-71 only along the first section.
The trail runs along the slope of Peña Sagra through scrubland and beech and oak forests. As you climb, views open up over the southern mountain ranges of Liébana and the Picos de Europa. The shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Luz lies at an altitude of 1,340 m on the middle slope of Peña Sagra. The vegetation along the trail, the views and the shrine are all landscape features of the route; visibility of the mountains depends on the weather.
You can complete the route on foot or by mountain bike. Mountain conditions vary by season, and signage and trail conditions may change. Check both before setting out so that your plans are suited to the conditions at the time.
Getting There and Planning Your Route
Luriezo can be reached by bus. Check the timetable before travelling, as bus services and times may change. Since the circular route starts and ends in Luriezo, you can plan your journey around the same location. If you would like to combine the route with a bus journey, coordinate your arrival and possible return trip with the timetable. This lets you plan your arrival and the end of the loop together without assuming a particular service.
