Arredondo offers several clearly distinct starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails that start or end in the town, protected river areas, and the Feria de Año de Todos los Santos on 1 November. You can plan your stay around a specific route or make the recurring festival date the centrepiece of your trip.

Rivers and protected areas

The Río Asón Special Area of Conservation includes parts of the municipality of Arredondo. A specific stretch of the Río Bustablao is protected: it runs from its confluence with the Río Asón to the bridge on the road from Bustablao. These two details refer to different areas: parts of the municipality along the Río Asón and a clearly defined stretch of the Bustablao.

Hiking trails from Arredondo

There are several different routes to choose from for hiking. The route to the Nacimiento del Asón, the waterfall, starts in Arredondo and is a circular trail. If you prefer a loop that returns to its starting point, the route to the Nacimiento del Asón offers this option. The route through the Valle de Asón runs from Arredondo via Socueva, Buzulucueva, Los Machucos and Bustablado, before returning to Arredondo. Another route leads from Arredondo along the Senda Fluvial del Asón, past the Río Asón and the Cascada del Ansón, back into town. The PR-S 09 “Sendero de Peña Lavalle” is also a hiking route from Arredondo. Trail conditions and availability can change; check the current situation before setting out. The routes differ in their courses: the Valle route passes through several towns, while the other is characterised by the river path and waterfall.

Fair and architectural history

The Feria de Año de Todos los Santos takes place in Arredondo on 1 November, a tradition held every year. It is a major livestock breeders’ gathering featuring a goat market. If you are planning your trip around this event, the date is the key point of reference; for a hiking trip, the focus is on finding the right route.

A religious building in Arredondo is one of the few examples of Neoclassical architecture in Cantabria. Construction began in 1852 under the direction of architect Manuel Gutiérrez Vélez; in 1988, the building was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural. The fair centres on the recurring annual livestock tradition, while the building’s history offers a glimpse into Neoclassical architecture in Cantabria.
