Taganana is a scattered settlement in Anaga Rural Park. If you are choosing a destination based on specific cultural or hiking interests, you can compare church history, historic trails and coastal destinations here. The topics range from a protected building with an artistic history to a circular hike with a clearly specified distance and duration.
Church, Chapel and Cultural Traces
The Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Its origins date back to the 16th century. Its rectangular floor plan and three naves give its architecture a clear structure. The church also houses the 16th-century Flemish triptych “Adoration of the Magi” by Marcellus Coffermans. The building’s history and the artwork thus provide distinct points of interest within the same church.
On Taganana’s square, the Chapel of Santa Catalina stands opposite the parish church. It was consecrated on May 29, 1630. The two buildings can thus be considered in relation to their location, even though the dates associated with them are far apart: the parish church dates back to the 16th century, while the chapel’s consecration date is precisely recorded.
Local history beyond the buildings is also linked to Taganana. The Librea recalls an episode in which sentries spotted a foreign fleet and 85 residents formed a militia. Palm weaving is also one of the cultural practices associated with Taganana. Together, these themes show different forms of cultural heritage: architecture, art, historical narrative and craft practice.
Las Vueltas: Trail History and Local Architecture
The Camino de Las Vueltas was laid out in 1506 along the course of an important pre-Hispanic trail, strengthening the connections between Taganana and La Laguna. Its role as a route continued well into the recent past: until quite recently, Las Vueltas was Taganana’s only transport connection with Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The date it was laid out and its later significance thus describe two different periods in its history.
The route also includes a paved path leading to the Portugal neighborhood in Taganana. Traditional house architecture is a feature there. Those interested in local history will therefore find that the Camino de Las Vueltas is not only a historic connection between places, but also relates to the architecture of a neighborhood.
Hiking and Practical Planning
The PR-TF 8 Afur–Taganana–Afur circular hiking trail is 14.3 kilometers long, rated moderate and listed as taking about seven hours. From Afur, it heads toward Tamadite Beach, climbs to CaserĂo del Chorro and Taganana, then returns to Afur via Monte de las Vueltas. At around seven hours, the hike should be planned as the main activity of a hiking day; check trail conditions before setting out.
For the PR TF 04 El Bailadero–Taganana hiking trail, bus line 077 is listed for the outbound journey from La Laguna bus interchange. For the return journey from Taganana to Santa Cruz bus interchange, line 946 is listed. As transport information can change, check the current TITSA timetable before your hike. This lets you consider bus planning separately from the time commitment for the approximately seven-hour circular hike.
Coastal Destinations and Scenery
Playa de Almáciga is one of Taganana’s three beaches. It has black volcanic sand and is suitable for surfing; the surf can be strong there year-round. This is important when planning time on the coast: the sand and the opportunity to surf are defining features of the beach, while the surf conditions should be taken into account when deciding on an activity.
Playa de Benijo offers views of the Roques de Anaga. This presents two different coastal aspects: Playa de Almáciga is described in terms of its sand, surfing and potentially strong surf, while the views of the Roques de Anaga are a defining feature when choosing Playa de Benijo. Depending on whether you want to focus on hiking history, church art or the coast, Taganana offers different starting points for planning your trip.
