Barranco del Bufadero flows into Maria Jimenez; from here, hiking trails lead toward Casas de La Cumbre or Taganana. For your planning, you’ll find specific information about a marked route, how to access it, and several TITSA bus lines. The former name El Bufadero, the Batería del Bufadero, and the festivities for San Juan Bautista offer a glimpse into the area’s history.

Barranco and biosphere reserve

Maria Jimenez lies along the banks of Barranco del Bufadero, which flows into the neighborhood. The ravine runs 7,642 meters through the valley of the same name. When the surf was heavy, water would burst with great force through an opening at its mouth, forming spectacular fountains and creating a loud rumble. The name Bufadero refers to this phenomenon.

Maria Jimenez is located within the Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve. UNESCO recognized the reserve in 2015. Hiking trails from Maria Jimenez lead toward Casas de La Cumbre or Taganana. These two destinations offer different directions to consider when planning your hikes.

Hiking: route and access

The PR-TF 3 Casas de La Cumbre–Valle Brosque–Casa Forestal hiking trail is 7.2 kilometers long, with an estimated duration of five hours. The distance describes the trail length, while the time is an estimate of how long it takes. When planning, take both figures into account rather than calculating the time needed from the distance alone.

Access to the Valle Brosque section is via the TF-11 road, the turnoff at kilometer 2, Calle Maria Jimenez, and Calle Viña La Cueva. The road continues to the end of the street in the hamlet of El Pelotón. Check road and trail conditions before setting out.

For the PR-TF 3, line 076 is listed for the outbound journey to Casas de La Cumbre and the return from Casa Forestal to the Intercambiador La Laguna. Check the current TITSA timetable before your hike, as the route number may change.

Bus lines and local history

Line 916 runs from the Intercambiador via Valleseco and Bufadero to Maria Jimenez, continuing to Los Valles. Line 945 runs from the Intercambiador via Valleseco and Maria Jimenez to San Andrés and Igueste de San Andrés. The two lines therefore serve different combinations of the destinations listed. Check the latest TITSA information before traveling, as routes may change.

Maria Jimenez was formerly known as El Bufadero. The name Maria Jimenez caught on thanks to a resident of the same name: toward the end of the 19th century, María Jiménez Ravelo ran a popular inn in the area. Both the former place name and a resident with her inn are thus part of the neighborhood’s naming history.

Military architecture, Balneario, and festivities

Batería del Bufadero is a military fortification dating from the late 19th century that is now in a state of severe disrepair. It is classified as protected military architecture in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The protection of these monuments is justified by their importance to the city’s history and by their technical and architectural quality. A plot of land on El Bufadero beach is bordered to the east by the state-owned Batería de Bufadero and to the south by Maria Jimenez beach.

The former Balneario de Santa Cruz de Tenerife is also connected to Maria Jimenez: it is located on the Autovía de San Andrés at the height of the neighborhood and holds significant historical, social, and symbolic value for the city.

Maria Jimenez’s traditional festivities are dedicated to San Juan Bautista. They include galas, outdoor dances, sporting events, cultural performances, and religious celebrations. The program for the 2026 edition was scheduled to run from June 6 to 24; individual events vary from year to year.
