La Matanza De Acentejo can be explored through a range of interests: agricultural landscapes, trails for getting active, protected nature and traces of the island’s history are all part of the picture. There is also a market selling produce from La Matanza and the Acentejo region, as well as a traditional pilgrimage. These themes give you several ways to plan your trip: you can balance nature and cultural experiences while deciding whether walks, outdoor sports or local produce should feature more prominently in your stay.

Landscape and trails

In Los Nateros, agricultural terraces, vineyards, chestnut trees and pines shape the cultural landscape. El Montillo is home to a nature and landscape reserve covering around 60,000 m², with a Fayal-Brezal forest. It is also home to one of the last habitats of the protected beetle subspecies Pimelia radula radula. Together, the agricultural landscape and protected natural area offer different ways to experience the local scenery.

Los Nateros has two circular trails with soft surfaces, suitable for walking or outdoor sports. The trail at Montaña La Bandera has been restored. The SL-TF 26 (Los Nateros–La Vica–Los Nateros) is officially approved within the municipality; its approval was published in 2023. The PR TF 25.3 connects Las Lagunetas and Los Nateros and appears on a route list documented in March 2023. Check current trail conditions before setting out on these routes. The BC-1 Ruta Norte mountain bike route connects to the rural center of Los Nateros via turnoffs. The 22-kilometer Las Calderetas–Lagunetas–Gaitero loop passes through La Vica. These details about the loop, hiking trails and mountain bike route show different ways to include physical activity in your travel plans.

Cultural heritage and places to visit

Numerous trails run along the Barranco de Acentejo, where you can walk through sections of lush vegetation. The ravine was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest, in 2007. Landscape and cultural heritage meet here in different ways: the trails pass through densely vegetated sections, while the BIC designation reflects the ravine’s cultural status.

The Ermita de San Antonio Abad is considered one of Tenerife’s oldest hermitages. It houses an image of Saint Anthony, believed to have been the first image of the saint to arrive on the island after the conquest. The Parroquia de El Salvador was built in the 20th century on the site of an older church, which was burned down by a group of anarchists in July 1936. One of the island’s most traditional pilgrimages is dedicated to San Antonio Abad and begins at the old Ermita de San Antonio Abad.

Local produce and recreation

The Mercadillo del Agricultor sells fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine, handicrafts and baked goods produced in La Matanza and the Acentejo region. The market adds a culinary stop featuring products from the municipality and the region to the area’s landscape and cultural attractions. La Vica is a recreation area suitable for picnics and excursions. The Paseo Peatonal along the TF-5 service road includes coastal viewpoints. The selection therefore includes places to take a break outdoors as well as places where the focus is on landscape, trails, history or local produce.
