The JardĂn Botánico Viera y Clavijo and the history of mills offer two different ways to explore Tafira Baja: a historical tour through botanical grounds and the story of the water that once powered mills. Other highlights include Plaza del General San MartĂn and Pista Deportiva Tafira Baja. You can choose what to focus on: the garden, historic buildings or sports facilities.
Botanical garden and historical tour
The JardĂn Botánico Viera y Clavijo lies along the Barranco Guiniguada ravine, between Tafira Baja and the Dragonal neighbourhood. It covers 27 hectares. A visit offers a historical tour through distinctive areas and grounds. The garden thus brings together botanical spaces and an explicitly historical perspective. If you are interested in nature and local history, this tour offers a distinct focus.
Water and mills in Tafira Baja
The history of the Molino de Tafira reaches back to a larger irrigation system. The canals of the Heredad de Tafira carried much of the water as far as Tafira Baja. In the 19th century, this water powered as many as ten mills. The Molino de Tafira is located behind the church in Tafira Baja and was built in 1821. It was the last mill to be powered by water from the Heredad de Tafira, also known as the Acequia de Tafira.
The mill has an aqueduct that remains in good condition. Made of stone and mortar, it has a diameter of 1.50 metres and is 12 metres high. The information about the canals and the up to ten mills shows the wider context; the Molino de Tafira represents a single structure within this history of water. This makes it possible to consider local history and the technical use of water as connected but distinct topics.
Square and sports facilities
Plaza del General San MartĂn has children’s play equipment, a sports court and partly landscaped gardens. Pista Deportiva Tafira Baja is freely accessible and open to the public. It has two basketball hoops. The two places therefore differ in their stated uses: the plaza combines various facilities, while the sports court is specifically equipped for physical activity.
Facilities may change as a result of maintenance, redevelopment or renovation. Public bus route 25 serves Pista Deportiva Tafira Baja. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can include the connection in your day’s plans without assuming a fixed departure time.
Cemetery and religious life
Cementerio de Tafira was inaugurated in 1939. It is located on a hill overlooking the road from Marzagán to Tafira. The cemetery includes an area reserved exclusively for the burials of members of the Jewish community. These features place the site within the history and religious diversity of Tafira Baja.
Services at the San Juan CrisĂłstomo parish church take place on Wednesdays at 19:00, Saturdays at 18:00 and Sundays at 11:00. Times may change. Check the latest information if you want to plan around them.
