Laida Beach is almost a kilometre long, with fine golden sand, and is the largest beach in the Mundaka estuary. Together with hiking trails and notable buildings, it offers several points of interest to consider when planning a trip to Ibarrangelu.

Beaches and water sports

Windsurfing, canoeing and sailing are possible at Laida Beach; Laga Beach has a surf club and surf school. These differences can help with planning: Laida offers several water sports, while Laga has a clear focus on surfing, with its club and school. Operators and seasonal offerings may change, so check in advance whether the activities you want are available.

Another coastal option is Antzora, a nudist cove near Laida. A footpath descends from the Antzora neighbourhood to the cove and is about 500 metres long. When planning your visit, take into account both the approximate length of the path and the descent.

Hiking trails and viewpoints

The PR-BI 165 route starts in Ibarrangelu and runs between farmhouses to the cemetery of Elantxobe in Bermokiz. After the junction in Bermokiz, it climbs uphill through the forest to the Ogoño viewpoint. Titled “Ruta hacia el mar,” the route is 6.5 kilometres long; the stated duration is two hours. The distance and time provide a concrete guide for planning your day.

The Ogoño viewpoint and summit are exposed to steep slopes and strong winds. Take these conditions into account when planning your hike. Another viewpoint is San Pedro de Atxarre, which offers 360-degree panoramic views across the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The hermitage of San Pedro de Atxarre stands on the 312-metre summit of Mount Atxarre.

Architecture and local tradition

The Church of San Andrés features a gilded Baroque altarpiece and a polychrome wooden ceiling in the Plateresque style. According to the description, the ceiling is one of the few surviving examples on the Iberian Peninsula. The Church of Santa Maria Engracia in Akorda was built in 1520. These distinctive design features and a specific construction date are among the cultural points of interest in the area.

The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is located next to Laida Beach. At the entrance to Ibarrangelu, Ibaeta pelota court is notable for its construction and ornamented pediment. These buildings offer contrasting points of interest: the chapel is by the beach, while the pelota court is distinguished by its location at the entrance to the village and its design.

The festival in honour of Santa Marina is celebrated in Akorda on 18 July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates in advance.

Accommodation and day planning

Two specific planning considerations may help when looking for a hotel in Ibarrangelu: the PR-BI 165 route starts in the village, and a footpath connects Ibarrangelu with Laga Beach. This allows you to plan your accommodation around a hike or a day at the beach. First consider which is more important for your trip, then factor the trails, beach activities and cultural sites mentioned here into your choice of destination.
