Hiking in Galdakao can be planned around two clearly named destinations: Ganguren or Upo. The routes differ in length and course, and the area also offers cultural attractions and historic buildings. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether hiking will be the main focus, and which cultural or architectural themes interest you as well.
Hiking Routes to Ganguren and Upo
Several hiking trails in the municipality of Galdakao were signposted and marked as part of an agreement between the municipality and Ganguren Mendi Taldea. Two can be compared directly by destination and route length. The 14.9-kilometre Ruta Ganguren begins in Aperribai, passes through Elorritxueta and reaches the summit of Ganguren.
The Ruta Upo Tontorrandi is 12.6 kilometres long and designated as a mountain hiking trail. It begins at the Lekuebaso recreation area and climbs to Mount Upo. In a direct comparison of their lengths, the Ruta Ganguren is 2.3 kilometres longer. The named destinations also differ: one route leads to the summit of Ganguren, while the other climbs to Upo. You can therefore choose first by destination and then by route length. However, distance alone does not indicate how demanding a hike is or how long it will take.
Culture and Local History
Galdakao Town Hall, dating from the mid-18th century, stands at Gurutzeko Plaza. Torrezabal Kultur Etxea adds a contemporary cultural offering to this historic setting: it is a versatile municipal theatre hosting performing arts productions, and also serves as Galdakao’s cinema. This means that theatre and film are two different cultural interests you can take into account when planning your trip. Performances, screenings and events may vary; check the current schedule before your visit.
Bridges and Landmarks
A striking monument is El Gallo in Urgoiti. It stands at a road junction on the route towards Donostia and Gasteiz. In Bengoetxe, there is a humped bridge with four arches in the Romanesque style. The bridge in the Plazakoetxe neighbourhood is made of stone, dates from the Renaissance and has three arches.
The two bridges can be compared using specific architectural features: the description of the Bengoetxe bridge highlights its humped profile, four arches and Romanesque style; for the Plazakoetxe bridge, the distinguishing features are its stone construction, Renaissance classification and three arches. These features of form and style offer architecture enthusiasts a way to tell the two structures apart. El Gallo offers a different point of interest: the monument is described in relation to Urgoiti and its location at the road junction.
River and Annual Festival
The Ibaizabal River flows through Galdakao and forms part of the area’s landscape. Together with the marked hiking trails and their named mountain destinations, it offers another perspective for planning a trip: you can explore Galdakao with both its hiking and its landscape in mind.
An annual event is the festival in honour of Saint Ignatius of Loyola in the Tximelarre neighbourhood. It is celebrated on 31 July. If you are planning a trip around this date, you can consider the festival as a possible reason to visit; check the latest festival dates when making specific travel plans.
