Güeñes combines the landscape of the Cadagua Valley with art, architectural heritage and regional themed routes. The river runs through the municipality in a narrow valley; different places offer starting points for exploring nature and culture. For your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on the landscape, architectural history or art. The following highlights show the different ways to experience Güeñes.

The valley and the Ruta del Cadagua

Steep slopes and the valley’s changing geology of sandstone, limestone and marl shape the landscape. The Ruta del Cadagua offers a regional perspective: it includes Sodupe and Güeñes and takes in places along the river, highlighting their social history, culture, crafts and trade, gastronomy, and architectural heritage. While the narrow valley defines Güeñes’s landscape, the route brings together a range of the region’s cultural themes.

Art and architectural heritage

ARENATZarte is a public space for avant-garde art in a botanical garden next to Villa Urrutia. This brings art and architectural history together as distinct areas of interest. Villa Urrutia was built in 1910 as the Urrutia family’s summer residence and now houses Güeñes Town Hall. Its original use and present-day municipal function give the building two perspectives across time.

The Church of Santa María in Güeñes was built in the 16th century. The Renaissance Palace of Ametzaga is another worthwhile place to visit. The Torre de La Quadra offers a different historical perspective: the fortress dates from the 15th century and played an important role in the factional wars.

The Torre de los Salcedo is a separate landmark. On the Camino de Santiago, La Quadra in Güeñes is a point of reference; the Torre de los Salcedo, a former site of the factional wars, is located there. The two towers therefore offer different local perspectives on the history of conflict.

Nature and routes

Arenaza Park is a place to rest and enjoy nature. While ARENATZarte focuses on avant-garde art in a botanical garden, the park offers a chance to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings. You can choose between an art-focused visit and a place for a break in the green.

The Bidegorri, a cycle path, connects the municipality of Güeñes with ARENATZarte. Check the current condition of the path before setting out, as conditions may change.
