Plentzia reveals its maritime character both in its landscape and in its buildings. The Ría de Plentzia is the mouth of the Butrón: the river runs through the municipality and eventually flows into the Cantabrian Sea. Plentzia Beach lies in a bay of the same name. This means a stay can take in both the coastal landscape and the history of the town, which can be explored in the old town, in museums and at individual buildings.

Estuary and Coastal Paths

At the mouth of the estuary, there is a small wave suitable for beginners in surfing or canoeing. Several hiking trails begin and end in Plentzia. The Route of the Cliffs connects Getxo and Plentzia and offers panoramic views of the Bizkaia coast. The paths and the route offer different ways to explore the landscape, without requiring you to follow the same itinerary.

Public transport connections may also be a factor in your planning: Plentzia is connected by Metro Bilbao Line 1. If you plan to take the metro, it is worth checking the timetable for your travel day.

Old Town and Architectural History

Plentzia’s old town brings together former sailors’ houses, palaces and a church. The Santiago Arch is the only surviving remnant of the former town wall. Another historic sight is the original Molino de mareas de Gazteluondo mill: built in 1506, it is considered the oldest tidal mill in Bizkaia. The surviving structures thus range from the former town wall to a mill whose history dates back to the 16th century.

The bridges also showcase different designs. Puente Nuevo is a white pedestrian bridge about 150 metres long. It was built as a cable-stayed bridge in 1991. The Pasarela de Plentzia, by contrast, consists of two inclined metal arches that meet at the top; steel cables support its walkway. Visitors interested in architecture can compare two clearly described structural forms here, without conflating their construction dates or functions.

Museums and Maritime History

At the Museo Plasentia de Butrón, visitors can see documents from the Cofradía de Mareantes de Plentzia dating from 1524 to 1870, as well as documents from the Escuela de Náutica de Plentzia, which operated until 1933. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural activities throughout the year and guided tours. The documents, which span a wide period, give the museum visit a focus on maritime history and nautical training.

The Farmacia-Museo Aramburu offers a different perspective. Its exhibition uses the pharmacy’s original rooms, the original laboratory and the old back pharmacy. Its subject is the development of medicine over the last century. Plentzia therefore offers different kinds of museum visits: maritime documents and nautical training on the one hand, and the history of medicine in historic pharmacy rooms on the other.

Wine in Plentzia Bay

The underwater winery Bodega Crusoe Treasure is located in an artificial reef, 20 metres deep in Plentzia Bay. The visit, which takes place entirely outdoors, includes an explanation of the project on land, a transfer, a tasting of two underwater wines aboard the Crusoe Treasure vessel and a 40-minute boat trip around the bay. For specific visit planning, it is advisable to check the latest visitor information.

When choosing Plentzia as a destination, you can weigh up different interests: the coast and activities on the estuary, routes with views of Bizkaia, architectural heritage or museum visits. Which of these you want to shape your trip may also influence your plans for your stay.
