Two routes of different lengths start at Kurtzeko Plaza: the 10.9-kilometre Kukuzburu Route and the 18.4-kilometre TravesĂa por el Ganguren. Both start from the same square, making it easy to compare their distances. When choosing between them, it is also important to consider which destinations you are looking for on each route.

Routes to a spring, ridge and summit

The Kukuzburu Route leads to the iron-rich spring of Uraburu and down to the Elorritxueta recreation area. The TravesĂa por el Ganguren offers the chance to walk the entire Ganguren ridge; it also reaches the summit of Kukuzburu. The destinations therefore differ as well: Uraburu and Elorritxueta are associated with the Kukuzburu Route, while the TravesĂa makes it possible to cross the entire ridge. Check current route conditions before setting out.

In addition to the summit of Kukuzburu, several bunkers from the LĂnea P military defense line can be seen. The line was built after the 1936 war. This adds a specific historical dimension to the named destinations, which may be especially interesting to travelers who want to take in traces of history while hiking.

Architectural history and everyday life at Kurtzeko Plaza

Galdakao Town Hall stands at Kurtzeko Plaza. It was built in the mid-18th century and is considered a Baroque town hall from that period. The square is therefore both the starting point for the two routes and a landmark in the town’s architectural history.

The Church of Santa María de Galdakao, built in 1896, offers another point of reference. It is located in the La Cruz neighborhood, whose name is connected with Kurtzea. The town hall from the mid-18th century and the church from 1896 mark different periods in Galdakao’s architectural history.

The Kurtzea fronton is also located at Kurtzeko Plaza. Training sessions take place there from Monday to Thursday; games are scheduled for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The days of the week provide a specific guide if you want to plan your stay around sporting activities. As schedules may change, check the current schedule before making a special trip.
