Etxebarria lies at the foot of Mount Kalamua, and the Urko River runs through the town. Mountains and narrow valleys define the surrounding area. Two interests come together when choosing this destination: trails through the landscape and an architectural history evident in churches, palaces and historic farm buildings. Visitors who want to spend time outdoors and discover the local culture during their stay will find specific points of interest in both areas.
Hiking trails along the Urko and on Mount Kalamua
Hikers can climb the 768-metre summit of Mount Kalamua. A trail about 2 kilometres long runs alongside the Urko from Palacio Munibe and passes old mills, smithies and tower houses. The Urko bidea is about 5 kilometres long: it follows the river from Barinaga to Markina-Xemein and passes through Etxebarria. This walking route is ideal for relaxing, taking a stroll and enjoying outdoor activities in contact with nature. Before your trip, check current local information for the approximate length and use of the Urko bidea.
If you are choosing based on distance, the trail from the Palacio, at about 2 kilometres, is the shorter option; the Urko bidea covers about 5 kilometres. The first trail highlights the old mills, smithies and tower houses along the river, while the Urko bidea follows the route between Barinaga and Markina-Xemein. Mount Kalamua is another option if you are looking for a summit to climb.
Etxebarria also has a history as a place of passage: since at least the Middle Ages, it was considered an important route between Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa. This former role adds to the ways visitors can explore the landscape on foot today.
Churches, palaces and historic buildings
The Baroque church of San Andrés Apóstol was founded in the 14th century and has a striking Baroque altarpiece. The church is usually closed. If you would like to visit, contact the parish priest beforehand.
A coat of arms on Palacio Patrokua displays the Barroeta family. The Palacio, the mill and the Ansotegui smithy together form a historic complex dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The buildings reflect different forms of architectural and economic life; at Ansotegui, the mill and smithy are specifically part of the same complex.
Palacio Munibe was reconstructed in the early 20th century by the architect J. M. Basterra. The estate includes a garden, a Japanese-style pond, stables and coach houses. The Palacio and its estate have also been used as filming locations, including for music videos by the groups Omago and Shinova. This connection between architecture and later cultural use gives the site another dimension without diminishing its historic architectural features.
Palacio de Mañozka was originally built as a 15th-century tower house. Two bishops are associated with the estate: Juan Mañozca was born there and served as Archbishop of Mexico from 1643 to 1653. José Santos Mañozca was also born there; he was Bishop of Cuba and was killed in the 18th century.
The HĂłrreo de Ibarguen offers another perspective on traditional construction. It stands on four stone pillars; its upper storey is made of oak and features carvings for ventilation. Along with the palaces and the Ansotegui complex, this building illustrates the different forms of historic architecture found in Etxebarria.
