A visitor centre in Sarría, riverside trails in the natural park and historic sanctuaries give Gorbeia Inguruak several distinct highlights. When planning, it is worth paying attention to the length, elevation profile and theme of each route: they differ considerably, and nature and cultural discoveries each have their own focus.

Hiking between the natural park and the river

Parque Natural de Gorbeia offers opportunities for hiking. The 1.7-kilometre Senda Vital follows a linear route along the river and has very little elevation change. Its short distance and profile make it easy to assess. The Senda Bayas-Gorbea is described differently: it begins at the Casa del Parque, 3.5 kilometres from Murgia, and follows the Bayas River to the bridges of Arlobi. Here, the starting point, course of the river and destination provide the main points of orientation. The Senda Vital is defined by its short distance and gentle elevation profile; for the Senda Bayas-Gorbea, the starting point, course of the river and destination provide the main points of orientation.

Routes to the sanctuaries

A 5.2-kilometre route leads from Murgia to the Ermita de Jugatxi. It is listed as taking around one hour and 30 minutes to walk, with an elevation gain of 205 metres and a low difficulty level. The path passes through an area surrounded by centuries-old oaks and beeches. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. Another option is the four-kilometre walk from Bitoriano to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Oro. It has a moderate difficulty level. Its distance and stated difficulty distinguish this walk from the route to the Ermita de Jugatxi and can help you plan your day accordingly.

Nature and regional themes

The visitor and interpretation centre for Parque Natural de Gorbeia, the Parketxea, is located in Sarría. Parque de Jugatxi has several benches and tables, a fountain and barbecue areas. There is also a traditional bowling alley and a recreation area. Facilities may change over time; check their condition if you plan to include them as a fixed part of your visit.

The Museo de la Miel is located in the town centre of Murgia, in Casa Oregi. It showcases the methods used to produce the honey made in the Gorbeia area. This offers a specific insight into honey production, adding another aspect of the region to its nature and hiking themes. You can choose what to explore based on your interests: spend time outdoors or learn about a regional product and how it is made.

Sacred architecture and pilgrimage

The first documented mention of the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Oro dates from 1138. Originally built as a Romanesque church, it was later remodelled in the Gothic style. From the sanctuary, at an altitude of 850 metres, there are views over the Zuia Valley and the Llanada Alavesa. There is a small car park next to the sanctuary to make access easier; check current parking options before your visit. There are also two pilgrim hostels by the main entrance. They can be used with prior authorisation; arrange this in good time, as the rules may change.

The Ermita de Jugatxi also combines art and history: inside are a 13th-century Romanesque depiction of the Virgin of Jugatxi and a Baroque altarpiece. A popular pilgrimage takes place there on the second Sunday in September. Pilgrimages to San Marcos, at Pentecost and to San Antonio are also associated with the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Oro. If you plan to attend the September pilgrimage, check the dates for the relevant year.

Another glimpse into the past awaits at Castro de las Peñas de Oro. The settlement dates from the 9th century BC and was inhabited until the 1st century. Gorbeia Inguruak thus brings together different historical perspectives: the sanctuary’s architectural history, the furnishings of the Ermita de Jugatxi and the Castro’s long history of habitation.

Climbing at Peñas de Oro

Gorbeia Central Park offers beginner climbing activities at Peñas de Oro, with difficulty grades 4 and 5. The activities and their availability may change; check current options before making plans. There are also climbing routes on the limestone walls where the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Oro stands.
