Boronas can be considered from two distinct travel-planning perspectives: the river and coastal landscape around Barayo, and the Camino del Norte. The hiking stage from Outur/Otur to A Caridá/La Caridad crosses the road through Boronas. When planning your time, you can therefore first decide whether to focus on the landscapes by the water or on a longer Camino stage. Both themes are part of the area, but they do not automatically form a single tour.

River landscape and the Barayo protected area

Near Boronas, the Reserva Natural Parcial de Barayo encompasses the final stretch of the Río Barayo, dunes, marshes and a natural beach with dark sand. The protected area lies on the boundary between Valdés and Navia. It is part of the European Natura 2000 network and is designated as a ZEC and ZEPA. This brings together specific landscape features and a clearly defined protection status.

The RĂo Barayo rises in BusmargalĂ in the municipality of Navia and flows into the Cantabrian Sea at Playa de Barayo. At its mouth, it forms an estuary of high natural value and scenic quality. Boronas is one of the settlements along the river. These geographical points help you see the river as more than just a name on a map: it runs from its source in the municipality of Navia to the coast at Barayo.

Barayo and Otur: two beach landscapes

Nearby Playa de Otur also offers specific points of comparison. The beach is 600 metres long, has fine dark sand and is connected by road. Two streams border it, and it also has its own dune system. At Barayo, by contrast, the final stretch of the river, marshes and natural beach make up the described landscape. If you are interested in coastal areas, you can compare their different features: Otur’s length, sand and streams, and Barayo’s river mouth and marshland.

The beaches mentioned here offer different perspectives on the coast, rather than the same kind of outing. An access route to Playa de Barayo from the Vigo side is described: from the car park above the beach, a forest path leads downhill for about 800 metres to the beach. The distance and direction provide a practical reference for planning this approach. As path conditions can change, check them before setting out.

The Camino del Norte and a shorter walking route

The 25.1-kilometre Camino del Norte stage from Outur/Otur to A Caridá/La Caridad is on a different scale. It crosses the road through Boronas and then climbs to Hervedosas. Farther west, it passes through Bao and Barayo towards Villainclán. Check the path conditions before setting out on a hike.

Comparing the approximately 800-metre forest path from Vigo to the beach with the 25.1-kilometre Camino stage helps you distinguish between planned hiking days by scale. The details describe different routes and planning considerations: one is the access route from a car park above the beach, the other a full stage between two places. For your travel plans, it makes sense to consider these routes separately and base your choice on the length of hike you want.

Religious and archaeological points of interest

Boronas also has cultural points of interest, in addition to nature and hiking. The Capilla de San Miguel de Boronas is a religious site in the village and lies on a walking route. The archaeological burial mound known as Túmulo del Collado de Buxtrilde is also located in Boronas, Valdés. The village’s character therefore encompasses religious and archaeological themes, as well as river landscapes and the coast.

You can prioritise your interests for a stay in Boronas: the RĂo Barayo and the beaches shape the landscape; the Camino del Norte offers a named, longer hiking stage; and the chapel and burial mound add local cultural history. When planning, check the condition of the paths you intend to use, and choose among the themes described according to the length and focus of your trip.
