Sobrescobio brings together trails of different lengths: a route near Campiellos of about 680 metres, adapted for people with reduced mobility, and the approximately 14-kilometre Ruta del Alba, taken as an out-and-back walk. There are also waterscapes, mountain views and traces of old routes. Discoveries range from information panels with Braille to traditional architecture in Soto.
Trails on Different Scales
The Senda Accesible de Campiellos ends at a viewpoint with information panels, including text and drawings in Braille. The trail thus combines a short route with a specific point of orientation at the end. Check local conditions before your visit.
The Ruta del Alba starts in the village of Soto in the municipality of Sobrescobio, is designated a natural monument and covers about 14 kilometres out and back. It leads through a water-rich valley with pools, calm stretches of water, small cascades and springs. Compared with the trail near Campiellos, the distance offers a different scale for planning: here, the focus is on a longer round trip, while there, the route is about 680 metres long.
Water and Views
The Rioseco Reservoir is a site of landscape and ornithological value, with footpaths, viewpoints and nature areas suitable for families. It is designated a wildlife reserve; at the far end there is an observation hide for watching waterbirds. Experiencing the landscape and birdwatching offer two different perspectives on the reservoir.
The surrounding trails each have their own highlights. The Senda Verde El TorrexĂłn leads to the Mirador de Cuyacerra. From there, you can see the Rioseco Reservoir and the medieval TorrexĂłn. The Ruta de la Sierra del CrespĂłn crosses meadows and chestnut groves above the reservoir, heading towards the Vallimaor mountain pasture. From the summit of La Xamoca, views extend over the NalĂłn Valley, the reservoirs, the Foces del LlaĂmo, the Sierra del CrespĂłn and Peña Mayor.
Old Routes and Built Heritage
Between Rioseco and AnzĂł, the CamĂn d'Aceu follows the surviving traces of an old road through Sobrescobio and the steep gorges of the NalĂłn. The route brings a historic connection in the landscape to life. The remains of Castillo de los Aceales, also known as TorrexĂłn de VillamorĂ©i, are thought to belong to a defensive structure of Roman origin.
Soto preserves traditional architecture, including hórreos, wooden balconies and an old washhouse. Hórreos are traditional granary buildings; together with the wooden balconies and washhouse, they offer a glimpse of the village’s everyday built heritage. Soto is also the starting point of the Ruta del Alba, so a hike and a look at local architecture can be considered as different interests for your stay.
Water Knowledge and Regional Cuisine
The Casa del Agua in Rioseco is temporarily closed; check access before visiting. Its participatory approach uses educational and demonstration materials for experimentation and observation. The museum space is organised around water as a substance, the influence of water on the natural environment, and hydropower, water distribution and wastewater disposal. It can be reached via the AS-17 between AvilĂ©s and Puerto de Tarna. Rioseco is also the starting point for several inland tours to Cangas de OnĂs.
The production of Queso CasĂn is also part of the local food culture. This cheese is among the oldest in Spain; Sobrescobio is one of three Asturian municipalities where it is made. It is made from cow’s milk, and the curd is kneaded several times. This particular production process adds a culinary discovery to the walking trails, historic traces and landscapes.
