Coaña combines archaeological sites, historic trails and coastal landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Coaña, you can plan your stay around these different highlights: the castros tell the story of former settlements, routes lead to notable landmarks, and viewpoints open up views of the coast and valley. It’s worth taking a closer look at each place when choosing where to visit, as the sites in Coaña and Mohías and the trails described each have their own character.

Castros and Historic Trails

The Castro de Coaña is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). Around 80 huts remain in Barrio Norte. The Recinto Sacro is interpreted as a group of indigenous saunas; the oldest models date back to the 4th century BC. The site therefore brings together both the surviving huts and an archaeological interpretation spanning a long period of time. Information at the Aula Didáctica supplements the visit and provides an overview of the phenomenon of castros in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Castro de Mohías offers a different perspective on these settlements: it extends across a plateau where around twenty huts have been excavated. Three trenches cut into the rock and a wall that has almost disappeared once protected the site. The Castro de Mohías is open to the public and free to visit. Check these access details locally again before travelling.

The historic routes should also be distinguished from one another. The Camino del Norte, one of the historic routes to Santiago de Compostela, passes through Coaña and is part of the World Heritage Site. The “Caleyón,” by contrast, preserves the old route of the Camino Real. The two names therefore refer to different route histories: one is a pilgrimage route in the context of World Heritage, while the other is a preserved old route.

Routes with Different Profiles

The Cordal de Coaña route (PR.AS-185) starts at the Mirador de Bustabernego in Trelles and ends at the Castro de Coaña. It is about 14.782 kilometres long and can be travelled on foot or by bicycle. Its description thus specifies both a distance and two possible ways of travelling; its endpoints connect a viewpoint with the archaeological site.

The Ruta Marinera de Ortigueira is an easy trail along the coast within the municipality of Coaña. It leads to the lighthouse and chapel of San Agustín. The routes can be compared based on their different features: the Cordal route specifies its length and ways of travelling, while the Ruta Marinera is described as easy and leads to coastal destinations. This lets you choose a route based on the characteristics given, without treating the two trails as the same.

Viewpoints and Coast

From the Mirador de Bustabernego, you can see the coast, the Navia Valley and the mouth of the Ría de Navia. The Mirador de Salías offers a wide panorama of the Cantabrian Sea and the cliffs on the western coast of Asturias. The two viewpoints therefore offer different perspectives: Bustabernego takes in not only the coast but also the valley and river mouth, while Salías focuses on the sea and the western Asturian cliffs.

The Salías recreation area has benches, tables, barbecue grills, waste bins, a fountain and a small shelter. As facilities may change, check before your visit whether the amenities you need are available. Playa de Arnelles is a separate coastal spot in the municipality of Coaña, on the eastern side of Cabo de San Agustín. It is part of a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and a Site of Community Importance (LIC).

Local Tradition in the Festival Calendar

Bolo rodado is a traditional local sport. Several tournaments take place throughout the year as part of Coaña’s festival calendar; individual dates vary. If a tournament is important to your travel plans, check the relevant event dates in advance. These local competitions add a recurring attraction to the archaeological and landscape highlights, though they are not tied to one fixed date.
