The Camino de la Costa reaches the centre of La Pedrera; a cycle route from Oviedo to Avilés follows roads and paths through increasingly rural surroundings. Together with the traditional Asturian houses, these routes offer practical points of reference for planning your trip. When choosing your destination, consider whether a stage of the Camino, cycling and walks, or architecture should be your main focus.

Cycling and walking routes around La Pedrera

The official cycle route from Oviedo to Avilés reaches La Pedrera via roads and paths used by walkers and cyclists. From La Pedrera, it continues along a local road, crosses the Río Nora and reaches San Cucao. The route therefore consists of a section through increasingly rural surroundings, followed by a stretch on a local road that crosses the river.

The official cycle route from GijĂłn to Oviedo is also useful for getting your bearings: before La Pedrera, it follows the La Camocha greenway. Another route leads from Fitoria via La Pedrera and Villaperi towards Folgueras, Ladines and La Corredoria. The different sequences of places can help you choose the route description that best matches your planned outing. Route conditions and local signage may change; check both before setting out.

The route through La Pedrera offers opportunities for walking or exercising on the Pista Finlandesa. The area has a distinctly rural character and features examples of Asturian vernacular architecture. This makes it possible to include outdoor activity and a look at traditional building styles as separate focal points in your travel plans.

Camino routes and their different courses

The Camino de la Costa leads into the centre of the village. The route connecting Oviedo to the Camino de la Costa also reaches La Pedrera; it crosses the tracks of an old railway on a small bridge. The railway once served the quarries on the northern slope of Monte Naranco. The route thus links the village’s connection to the Camino with a specific detail from its transport history.

The Oviedo–Avilés stage of the Camino del Norte offers a different perspective: it descends along a woodland path towards La Pedrera. By contrast, the Camino de la Costa specifically reaches the centre of the village. When comparing the routes, you can therefore use the features described as a guide: a woodland path and descent on one route, and arrival in the village centre on the other.

Asturian houses and architecture

La Pedrera lies in a green Asturian landscape dotted with traditional houses, corridors and balconies. Many of these houses were built in the late 19th century. The stretch of the OV-4 starting from La Pedrera also passes through several parishes with numerous traditional Asturian houses, whose features include corridors, galleries and balconies. These terms refer to different elements of the architectural styles described along this route.

Outside La Pedrera stands one of the oldest and most interesting houses; an inscription gives the year 1882. Nearby, Puente Cayés has numerous paneras and hórreos decorated with Celtic motifs. The details found here thus differ from the decorative features of buildings in the nearby area.

Landscape and surroundings

Nearby is NaranquĂn, one of the largest chestnut forests in the municipality. Alongside chestnut trees, it is home to native oaks, poplars, beech trees and cherry trees. Its seasonal appearance may vary. The forest adds another landscape feature to the rural routes and architecture, without implying a specific length of visit.

For public transport planning, TUA lists the “La Pedrera I – La Rabila” stop, number 4375, on the V1 Villapérez–HUCA line. Check the current timetable before travelling if you want to coordinate your arrival. This lets you combine your journey with the routes and landscape features you want to focus on during your stay in La Pedrera.
