The history of Lugo De Llanera is reflected in several distinct themes: the archaeological site of Lucus Asturum, a Roman road connection and the architectural history of the Casa de Cultura. There are also natural features along the RĂo Noreña del AguilĂłn, a cycling route and markets with different timings. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes separate: archaeology and architecture represent different periods, while the route and markets raise more practical questions about activities and dates.
Archaeological history and Roman connections
The archaeological site of Lucus Asturum is located in the area of ErĂa de La Castañera, less than a kilometre from La EstaciĂłn, also known as Lugo De Llanera. Lucus Asturum is identified with present-day Lugo De Llanera. Archaeological excavations were carried out in the 1980s and 1990s in the vicinity of the former parish church of Santa MarĂa de Lugo de Llanera and its rectory. Both the site and the earlier excavations are therefore part of the town’s archaeological history.
A Roman road connected Lucus Asturum with Lucus Augusti and continued from there via Iria Flavia towards Bracara Augusta. This historic connection places Lugo De Llanera along a route linking several named places. It adds another perspective on the town’s history to its archaeological themes.
The Casa de Cultura and its architectural history
The Casa de Cultura de Lugo de Llanera is housed in a 17th-century manor house. The former residence was converted into a municipal library with an event hall. The building retains the traditional Asturian style; its rectangular floor plan and two storeys are specific features of its architecture. Alongside the archaeological heritage, a historic building with a municipal function is therefore central to the town’s cultural profile.
Riverside nature and cycling route
Lugo De Llanera’s natural heritage includes the abandoned meanders and floodplains along the lower stretch of the RĂo Noreña del AguilĂłn. Meanders are bends in a river; floodplains are areas that can be inundated. These two features offer different insights into the riverside landscape: former river courses and areas associated with flooding.
The La Fusta de Llanera cycling route starts at Lugo De Llanera railway station, heads towards Posada de Llanera and ends back at the station. If you include the route in your plans, check current trail conditions and services before setting off.
Weekly market and Christmas market
A weekly market is held on Saturdays in both Lugo de Llanera and Posada de Llanera. As market arrangements can change, it is a good idea to check the date before planning your trip. The Llanera Christmas market lasts three days and alternates between the two towns from year to year. Its venue is therefore not the same every year.
More than 40 local shops take part in the Christmas market, offering handmade products and a varied range of food and drink. The programme includes craft workshops, magic and theatre performances, storytelling and concerts. Participating shops and individual programme events may change. So check the exact dates and venue for that year’s Christmas market before your trip.
