For hiking days starting from Caleao, there are very different routes to choose from: a moderate 11-kilometre circular trail and a considerably longer traverse to La Infiesta. Gorges, beech forest and historic buildings add their own natural and cultural themes to the routes.
Hiking from Caleao: Circular Trail or Traverse
The Ruta de la Cabeza l'Arcu (PR-AS 124) begins in the village square. From there, the trail crosses the river and climbs gently into the Pasera gorge. The route is an 11-kilometre circular trail and is rated moderate. Its circular layout and length provide a clear framework for planning your day.
The Ruta de los Arrudos (PR-AS 61) begins just before Caleao, along a path leading to a recreation area next to the Capilla de San Antonio. The first section passes through meadows beside the RĂo Los Arrudos. Along the way, the trail crosses the river several times and reaches the La Calabaza suspension bridge; the climb through the Los Arrudos gorge begins there.
The traverse from Caleao to La Infiesta is 22.9 kilometres long, takes 8 hours and 5 minutes, and has a moderate to high difficulty level. The two routes are therefore quite different: the circular trail is shorter and moderate, while the traverse is longer and more challenging. Check local trail conditions before setting out; they may affect walking time.
Gorge, Beech Forest and Mountain Lake
In Valle XuliĂł, a trail winds through beech forests alongside cascades and pools in a stream, crossing the water several times. Here, waterways and forest accompany the trail, while the climb through the gorge on the Ruta de los Arrudos offers a different landscape focus.
Collada de Ubales is the highest point on the Ruta de los Arrudos. From there, Llagu Ubales can be reached via a short detour. The small mountain lake is home to several amphibian species, including the alpine newt and the Iberian alpine newt. From Collada, views stretch to Vega de Brañagallones, Cantu l'Osu and Tiatordos, as well as the western massif of the Picos de Europa. This makes it possible to enjoy the high point, the views and a detour to a mountain lake as distinct highlights of one hike.
Churches and Historic Routes
The parish church of Santa Cruz la Real de Caleao was built at the end of the 16th century. The Iglesia de Santa Cruz la Real de Caleao has a south portal in the Classicist tradition. The Ermita de la Virgen de Ricao has different architectural features: the stone chapel has a single-nave layout and an attached sacristy.
The history of the Ermita is also tied to the community. Since the 13th century, the people of Caleao have traditionally looked after the chapel, carrying out roof work and repairs when needed. Its historical significance therefore extends beyond its architectural form to a long tradition of community care.
On the Ruta de los Arrudos, after descending to La Carbaza, the trail joins the old CamĂn de Castilla. Carters from Caso used it regularly in the past. This historic section of the route adds a glimpse into the route’s former use to its natural and hiking themes.
A Longer Journey Through Three Biosphere Reserves
For those planning more time for a hiking trip, the TravesĂa 3 Reservas is a six-day route from Caleao to Covadonga through three biosphere reserves. Check the availability of the offer before booking.
