In Cangas Del Narcea, wine, historic buildings and nature come together. When planning a stay, you can choose your focus accordingly, whether it is the town’s palaces and places of remembrance, its wine-growing culture, or its trails and landscapes. Specific points of interest include both a guided museum visit and hikes with varying distances and conditions.
Palaces, Baroque architecture and places of remembrance
The Palacio de Pambley was built in the 16th century and is the oldest palace in the town. The town centre is also home to numerous palaces and houses bearing coats of arms. The old quarter of Barrio de Entrambasaguas includes the Capilla del Carmen. The BasĂlica de Santa MarĂa Magdalena dates from the 17th century and is considered one of the outstanding examples of Asturian Baroque.
The mining history is also reflected in the townscape: inaugurated in 1984, the Monumento al Minero commemorates the mining industry, which was important to the area. The Puente colgante has a different character. Local architect José Gómez del Collado built the pedestrian suspension bridge in 1970; it stands 25 metres above the River Narcea. The bridge is not suitable for people with a fear of heights.
Wine-growing and visits
Cangas del Narcea’s wine identity includes its own DOP Vino de Cangas. A visit to the Museo del Vino de Cangas includes a guided tour of the Lagar de Santiso, a traditional winery. Visitors learn about the wine-making process in traditional Asturian society.
The Museo del Vino is located in the Lagar de Santiso and preserves its wine press, as well as various pieces of equipment used to make wine and grow vines. The Paseo del Vino is a walking trail connecting the wine-growing areas of San Tisu and Las Barzanieḷḷas. The annual Fiesta de la Vendimia del Vino features a wine fair, a craft market with regional products, tastings and guided tours of the museum. Muniellos has three official routes that start and end at the Las Tablizas visitor reception centre. These include a 1.2-kilometre, accessible wooden walkway for the return journey. Weather and conservation requirements may affect trail conditions. Another hiking option is the ascent to Cueto de Arbas: this moderately difficult, 7.2-kilometre return hike passes through wet areas, peatlands and moraine deposits that reflect the glacial shaping of western Asturias. Conditions here may also change with the weather.
A hiking trail to the remains of Roman gold-mining works starts at San Fiz. In the area of Cangas del Narcea within the natural park, the Narcea and its many tributaries offer opportunities for trout and salmon fishing; regulations may apply, so check the current rules in advance.
