There are six signposted road climbs to Alto del Acebo in Cangas Del Narcea, ranging from 8 to 14.6 kilometres in length. For planning a cycling route, this range offers a concrete comparison by distance. The area also opens up other possibilities: oak forest, glacial landscapes, hiking destinations and culture offer different reasons to visit. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Forest, Lagoons and Mountain Views

Bosque de Muniellos encompasses the Munieḷḷos and La Vilieḷḷa mountains in Cangas Del Narcea and is considered Spain’s largest oak forest. A permit is required to visit the forest. Check the current requirements in advance, as access rules can change.

The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn de Muniellos is located between Oballo and Moal, outside the Integral Reserve. It is housed in a former quarry and features interactive spaces, projections and models. Its location and facilities distinguish the centre from the forest itself, which requires a permit to visit.

The climb to Pico de la Candanosa leads to four lagoons: la Peña, Grande, Fonda and La Isla. The route is considered a particularly interesting hike. The route to Cueto de Arbas combines glacial landscapes with impressive mountain views from an altitude of 2,002 metres. Another route reaches Laguna de Arbas, considered the largest glacial lagoon in the comarca. You can choose according to the landscape that appeals to you: four named lagoons at Pico, glacial scenery and high-altitude views at Cueto, or the single lagoon highlighted regionally at Arbas.

The River Narcea and its tributaries in the Cangas Del Narcea area are also suitable for fishing for trout and salmon. This adds an interest connected with water to the walking routes and mountain destinations.

Baroque Architecture, a Bridge and a Market

The BasĂlica de Santa MarĂa Magdalena is located in Cangas Del Narcea beside the suspension bridge; the weekly market takes place in its surroundings. Built in the 17th century, the basilica is considered one of the finest examples of Asturian Baroque. The architecture, bridge and market offer different ways to experience the town.

Another historical landmark is the Monasterio de San Juan Bautista de Corias, linked to Courias by a stone bridge dating from the 14th century. This offers a choice of two distinct cultural interests: an example of Asturian Baroque and a connection with a specific date.

Wine and Living Traditions

Bodega Monasterio de Corias offers a guided tour with a commented wine tasting. You can sample wines made from native grape varieties such as albarĂn negro and verdejo negro; reservations are required. The experience ends with a tasting of Chosco de Tineo, bringing wine and Chosco together in the same offering.

The Museo del Vino at Lagar de Santiso preserves the lagar’s wine press, as well as various tools used in winemaking and viticulture. Compared with the guided tasting at the bodega, the museum focuses on the objects preserved in connection with winemaking and viticulture.

A large pilgrimage takes place at the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de L'Acebu on 8 September. The following Sunday, a procession and blessing of the livestock follow. This sequence makes the two parts of the tradition clear; check the specific event dates before travelling.
