Cabranes reveals its rural landscape especially well from its trails: meadows, wooded valleys and native forests define the area, while panoramic views open up across the Picos de Europa, the Sierra del Sueve, Peñamayor, the Aramo, Redes and the Cantabrian coast. This combination of landscape and far-reaching views provides a clear framework for exploring the area. Its culture can also be discovered through a variety of traces: historic routes, a protected church, museums and local festivals each offer a distinct perspective.

Trails through landscape and history

The route to Peña Cabrera is a 10-kilometre circular trail of moderate difficulty, starting and ending in Santolaya. Along the way, it offers views of the Ría de Villaviciosa and the valleys of the Viacaba and Profundo rivers. Its length, difficulty level and start and end points make it a clearly defined option for your plans.

To reach the Peñacabrera area, take the road between Villaviciosa and Infiesto, then follow a 1.4-kilometre paved road to Niao and continue along a path to the recreation area. The traditional architecture route begins near the Museo de la Escuela Rural and crosses the entire municipality. It focuses on Cabranes’ architectural history, setting it apart from the hike to Peña Cabrera, whose details mainly describe its length, difficulty and views.

A branch of the Camino Real de Francia runs through Cabranes between Sariego and Piloña. The Cabranes branch passes through Pandenes and then follows the historic Camín de los Moros. This history of the route complements the traditional architecture route with another historic thread, without the two routes being treated as the same.

Architecture, museums and traces of everyday life

San Julián de Viñón is a protected church and represents the transition from pre-Romanesque to Romanesque architecture. This transition makes it especially interesting for travellers who want to appreciate not only individual architectural styles, but also how they evolved.

The Museo de la Escuela Rural de Asturias is housed in a former school dating from 1908. Its exhibits include household furnishings and traditional Asturian ceramics. The building and collection offer a glimpse of the former schoolhouse and everyday objects. The Casa-Museo de la Cerámica Popular Asturiana is also located in Piñera.

Torazu also brings together different aspects of Asturian architectural culture. The Vuelta a Cabranes passes through rural settlements before reaching Torazu. There, you will find traditional houses, old hórreos and the rural Baroque church of San Martín el Real. Homes built by residents who returned from the Americas stand alongside traditional Asturian houses with corridors and galleries. The combination of these architectural forms makes Torazu a specific destination for anyone interested in rural architecture.

The former headframe of the Viñón mine is also part of the area’s cultural landscape and is considered a tourist attraction in Cabranes. Its former purpose offers a different perspective from churches, homes and traditional granaries: the municipality’s industrial heritage comes into view here.

Local festivals and Asturian cuisine

The Festival del Arroz con Leche takes place every year on the second Sunday in May in Santolaya and is a festival of tourist interest in the Principality of Asturias. The festival includes a traditional market for crafts and agricultural products, as well as free rice pudding tastings in the morning. Individual events may change from year to year. If you plan to attend, check the date and programme for your travel year.

Another culinary tradition takes centre stage at the Festival de la Boroña de forna: boroñas are baked in traditional fornas that are more than 300 years old. In Cabranes, you can experience different aspects of regional food culture, from the rice pudding festival in Santolaya to the traditional preparation method using old ovens.
