La Xorenga is considered the largest rock art and engraving complex in Asturias. Extending across slate outcrops, it covers about 500 metres. Its scale makes the site a striking gateway to early art in Grandas De Salime—and sets it apart from the area’s museums and historic buildings.

Archaeological traces and their stories

The Museo Castro Chao SamartĂn is located immediately beside the ruins of the archaeological site at Castro. It sits on a hillside with panoramic views of the archaeological complex and the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Grandas De Salime. More than 350 original objects are displayed in the museum, offering insights into the lives of the inhabitants of ancient Ocela. Visits to the Chao SamartĂn site start at the museum and are always guided; check the schedule before your trip. The Museo del Chao SamartĂn can be reached from Grandas De Salime via the AS-28 towards Puerto del Acebo.

Castro de PelĂłu also tells the story of several periods of use: its sequence of settlement dates back to the beginning of the Iron Age. In later centuries, during the 1st and 4th centuries AD, the site was fortified again. The TĂşmulos del Canadeiro are a group of six Neolithic burial mounds. Their excavation and subsequent preparation for interpretation and visits were planned as a project.

Buildings, collections and cultural heritage

The Museo Etnográfico de Grandas de Salime is spread across Casa Rectoral, Casa del Molinero and A Casoa. More than 3,000 square metres of exhibition space are devoted to the occupations and everyday life of the rural society of western Asturias. Traditional building and furnishing features include a mill, a granary, a raised storehouse and a chapel. The various buildings and exhibits make the museum a discovery for anyone interested in rural life and its architectural heritage.

The original church of the Colegiata El Salvador dates back to the 12th century. Its Romanesque portal is preserved inside the present-day church and has four semicircular archivolts. Its historic age and surviving architectural detail each tell a different part of the building’s history. Another chapter in the area’s heritage is the Central Hidroeléctrica de Salime, built between 1945 and 1955 and considered one of Spain’s most significant and monumental examples of water-related industrial heritage.

Landscape between rivers and viewpoints

The Sierra del Acebo crosses Grandas De Salime, dividing the area between the Navia and AgĂĽeira river basins. The eastern part lies within the protected landscape of Sierras de Carondio y Valledor. The Navia is considered particularly suitable for trout fishing. These geographical features lend the landscape different characteristics: river basins, a protected eastern area and the mountain range that crosses the region.

At the Mirador Boca de la Ballena, the concrete viewpoint above the Navia opens up views of the reservoir and the Salime dam. Access from the AS-14 is via a tunnel cut into the rock; check road conditions locally. The Salto de Salime is used for hydroelectric power generation and is also compatible with water sports and navigation. If you have specific plans around the Salto de Salime, check current access conditions locally.

Comparing stages and routes

The Camino Primitivo stage from Grandas De Salime to Puerto del Acebo is the final stage of the route in Asturias. It runs entirely through Grandas De Salime and is 13.2 kilometres long. For the most part, it follows dirt or gravel tracks through natural areas between small settlements. The cycling stage of the Camino Primitivo from Grandas De Salime to Fonsagrada offers a different option: it is 27 kilometres long, linear, easy and designed for road bikes. The details on distance, route and bike type help distinguish the two stages according to their respective purposes.

Local routes offer further insights. The Ruta de Pousabadelle crosses a 14th-century medieval stone bridge and passes through Castro, where the Chao SamartĂn archaeological site is located. The Ruta de los Entornos de Grandas is a cycling tour that starts near the ethnographic museum, follows the old Camino de Santiago and offers panoramic views of rivers, reservoirs and mountains. Together, they offer a route featuring a bridge and archaeological connections, and a cycling tour with views of a variety of landscape features.
