Berodia combines protected rock art and historic buildings with a route offering views as far as the Sierra del Cuera. The Abrigo de Berodia, the Palacio de DĂaz Inguanzo and the Church of Santa MarĂa Magdalena each offer a different focus: archaeological art, stately architecture and a church history with a documented predecessor. There is also the Ruta de los Artistas de la Covaciella, which passes through Berodia to the Mirador de Las Cuevas recreation area. When planning your visit, you can therefore first decide whether to focus on architectural and cultural history or on combining trails with landscape views.
Rock Art and Architectural History
Located in the municipality of Cabrales, the Abrigo de Berodia is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). It preserves rock art featuring angular engravings and rhythmic rows of linear lines. These forms provide a different cultural focus from the buildings: at the Abrigo, the emphasis is on engravings and lines; at the Palacio and the church, it is on architecture and building development.
The Palacio de DĂaz Inguanzo was designated a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural in 1994. It is an example of a rural stately building type between a residence and a palace. Its layout is arranged around a tower between two symmetrical wings.
The present-day Church of Santa MarĂa Magdalena replaced an older church dedicated to Santa MarĂa, which is documented as far back as the late 14th century. Construction of the present church is documented as having begun around 1780; it was modified several times in the 19th century. These dates refer to different building phases: the late 14th century refers to the documented predecessor, while construction of the present church began around 1780.
Trails, Landscape and Orientation
The Ruta de los Artistas de la Covaciella passes through Berodia and continues to the Mirador de Las Cuevas recreation area. A nearly level section of the trail along the mountainside offers excellent views of the Sierra del Cuera. If you plan to hike the route, check the current trail conditions beforehand, as they may change.
The Mirador de Las Cuevas offers views of the Cueva del Bosque cave, the Abrigo del Golondrón rock shelter and the Caverna de Covaciella, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Along the route, you will find two different types of views: the Sierra from the trail section and the cave and rock shelter from the viewpoint. The route passes through Las Estazadas and the Casaño Valley on the way to Inguanzo and Berodia.
Choose the Focus of Your Stay
For the first option, the rock art, Palacio and church offer different points of interest; for the second, there are the views of the Cuera from the mountainside and the vistas from the viewpoint. You can use this to focus your hotel search on the part of your stay that matters most to you.
