In Asiego, cheesemaking and cider go hand in hand with historic sites and views of the mountain landscape. A guided cheese dairy tour and the Ruta'l Quesu y la Sidra offer insights into the production of local specialities. San Miguel, La Caleya and Taranu add other dimensions: murals, a medieval neighbourhood and archaeological connections shape the village’s cultural character.

Cheesemaking and cider

Quesería Asiegu offers a guided tour of an artisanal organic cheese dairy. The tour takes you through the production areas and ageing cave, and ends with a cheese tasting. You will also learn about the Cabrales cheese-making process. The visit therefore includes several stages, from cheesemaking and ageing to tasting. Confirm the booking and the dairy’s opening times before your trip.

The Ruta'l Quesu y la Sidra is an ethnographic excursion in Asiego. In addition to a visit to a cheese dairy, it includes an apple orchard and a llagar, where you can learn about the cider-making process. An espicha, a typical Asturian gastronomic celebration, brings the culinary experience to a close. The excursion thus brings together cheese, apple growing and cider in one offering. Check the reservation requirements and seasonal availability in advance; route details may vary depending on operating hours.

Church, neighbourhood and archaeological connections

The parish church of San Miguel preserves murals dating from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The restored paintings are considered one of Asiego’s main attractions and are part of a cultural walking tour. Check locally for access to the church interior. La Caleya offers a different historical focus: the village’s oldest neighbourhood dates back to the Middle Ages.

Taranu is an archaeological area in the highest part of Asiego. Fourteen Bronze Age axes, the Giant’s Tomb and the remains of a castle are associated with the area. Local accompaniment may be required for access. These archaeological connections sit alongside the visible murals and the history of the neighbourhood, but offer a distinct focus for planning your trip.

Along a path in Asiego is a Corten steel installation in the form of a railing, depicting 21 cows. It pays tribute to pastoral life in the Sierra del Cuera and the Picos de Europa.

Views of the mountain landscape

From the Tebrandi mountain pasture, you can see the three massifs of the Picos de Europa, Monte Sueve and the Sierra del Cuera. The Pedro Udaondo viewpoint is another attraction in Asiego. Near the village of Asiego in Cabrales, there is also a recreation area with parking and views of the Picos de Europa, particularly Naranjo de Bulnes (Picu Urriellu).

The viewpoints described here offer different perspectives: from Tebrandi, you can see several mountain ranges; the recreation area highlights the Picos de Europa and Naranjo de Bulnes in particular. The landscape thus complements Asiego’s cheese and cultural offerings with another way to experience the village.
