La Rinconada combines extensive green spaces and paths with archaeological remains and lively festival traditions. This offers two distinct ways to plan a stay: spending time outdoors and learning about the history of the area. Art in public spaces and seasonal events add to the picture.

Parks and paths at your own pace

Parque El Majuelo is a riverside park that has been expanded to cover an area of 210,000 square metres. Another green space is Parque Central de La Unión: it covers 2.8 hectares and has walking and cycling paths, places to relax and a water feature. Check the park’s current facilities before your visit.

The Eje del Agua is a walking and cycling route more than 20 kilometres long, connecting Parque El Majuelo with Parque de Las Graveras. La Rinconada also has a cycling network of around 40 kilometres. These figures refer to different planning scales: the Eje del Agua is a single route with named endpoints, while the approximate distance describes the cycling network. Depending on your interests, you can focus on a specific route or on cycling in La Rinconada more broadly.

Parque El Majuelo offers another activity: in connection with the Guadalquivir, the route is used for rowing and canoeing. So walks and cycling tours are not the only options; water sports are also among the activities described around the park.

Archaeology, architecture and art

Cerro Macareno is an artificial settlement mound preserving the remains of a Tartessian and Turdetani settlement from the 1st millennium BC. It is located in the municipality of La Rinconada and is protected as an archaeological zone and as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico “Francisco Sousa” displays pottery from Cerro Macareno dating from the 8th to the 1st century BC. The pieces include Tartessian, Phoenician, Greek, Iberian and Roman works. The long period and diverse cultural influences make a museum visit a complement to exploring the archaeological site.

Other points of interest for the history of architecture include the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, a 15th-century Mudéjar church, and La Rinconada Town Hall, an example of Andalusian regionalist architecture. Those interested in public art can find paintings and sculptures in the Museo Urbano al Aire Libre. The works are spread across different neighbourhoods and include façades, neglected areas, transformers and roundabouts. A catalogue can help you plan a walk past the artworks; individual murals may change over time.

The University of Seville and UNED also hold an annual seminar in La Rinconada, usually around November, on current developments in palaeontology and archaeology. More than 200 people attend. Alongside individual sights, the event offers another way to explore the themes that shape the area.

Festivals and local traditions

The Feria del Abrazo is part of La Rinconada’s recurring seasonal festival calendar. Plan your visit around the specific event dates. The Romería de San Isidro takes place within a set timeframe: every year on the first weekend in October, it runs from the parish church of San José to El Toril. There, participants share a meal and spend the afternoon before returning to San José. The route, shared meal and return journey are all part of the event.

The Fiesta de la Patata is associated with the start of the potato harvest. The festival includes tasting a potato and meat stew, bringing an agricultural connection together with a local dish. If a festival is a key part of your trip, check the dates in advance; the RomerĂa is held annually on the first weekend in October.

Getting there and planning your accommodation

For train travel, the Cercanías C1 line between Seville and Lora del Río is one option to consider. It provides access to La Rinconada station and El Cáñamo station in San José de La Rinconada. Check the timetable for your travel date. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on: parks and paths, archaeological and architectural attractions, or a stay around a festival date.
