Teba offers several distinct reasons to visit: megalithic structures, a cave with prehistoric paintings, signposted routes, street totems dedicated to Cervantes, and events celebrating cheese. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether archaeology, hiking, literary history or regional cheese traditions should shape your stay. These themes differ not only in subject matter, but also in the practical route information and the changing dates of the Feria.
Dolmens and Prehistoric Traces
The La Lentejuela necropolis comprises 12 dolmens across just over 6 hectares and is considered the largest concentration of megalithic structures in the province of Málaga. The dolmens date from the late Neolithic and Copper Age; evidence also points to their reuse during the Bronze Age. The complex includes two peristalith circles with burial mounds inside, as well as several chamber tombs. Different types of tombs can therefore be found side by side, while their chronology ranges from early use to possible later reuse.
The Cueva de las Palomas adds an underground system to the prehistoric sites, one that served as a refuge for prehistoric communities. It also features schematic red rock paintings from the Copper Age. Unlike the necropolis, the focus here is not on different types of tombs, but on its former use as a refuge and on the paintings.
Hiking Routes with Different Details
The route through the Sierra de La Lentejuela starts at Teba’s industrial estate, is signposted and is listed as 12 km long, with a moderate to high level of difficulty. From the route, a connecting path leads to the remains of the ancient Roman city at Cortijo del Tajo. The route description therefore combines a specific distance and difficulty level with an archaeological destination.
The Tajo del Molino route starts on Calle Santiago in Teba, is signposted and is rated as moderate. Two different distances are given: 10 km and just over 9 km. Compared with the 12 km Sierra route, Tajo del Molino is shorter and has a lower level of difficulty. If you are choosing between the two hikes, these are the clear differences; for Tajo del Molino’s distance, keep both figures in mind. The Nacimiento de Torró is also mentioned in connection with this route. The spring supplies water to the surrounding vegetable gardens and part of Teba.
Cervantes and Cheese Traditions
As part of Teba Ciudad Cervantina, ten street totems provide information about the geographical context of 1594, Cervantes, and his life and work. Dulcinea, Sancho and episodes from Don Quixote are also among the topics. QR codes offer additional information, a quiz and a map showing the locations of the various quiz questions. The topics therefore range from historical references to characters and episodes from the work.
The Feria Mercado del Queso Artesano is recognised as a Fiesta de Singularidad TurĂstica. More than 50 cheesemakers offer their products there, including Andalusian cheeses and cheeses with prestigious protected designations of origin from the Iberian Peninsula. The Feria del Queso Artesano features practical workshops on making fresh artisan cheese, as well as guided tastings of four traditional Andalusian cheeses. Dates and programme vary with each edition. If the Feria is important to your trip, check the dates for the relevant edition in advance.
