The Nacimiento del Río Genal Natural Monument is located in Igualeja, in the province of Málaga, and is part of the Valle del Río Genal Special Area of Conservation (ZEC). Nature, hiking and local history offer different ways to shape your stay. You can choose Igualeja based on whether you want to focus on the landscape, one of the routes or the town’s historic architecture.
Nature and Routes
The PR-A-222 connects Cartajima and Igualeja through dense chestnut forests and the Río Nacimiento valley. It crosses the Río Nacimiento at a ford and then climbs onto the Igualeja ridge; via Calle Hiladero, it leads into Igualeja. The valley, river crossing, ridge and entrance to the town are all part of the same route. Trail conditions may change. Check them before your hike, especially with regard to the ford.
Igualeja’s network of trails includes three hiking routes through natural and cultural landscapes. The SL-A 173 can also be completed by bicycle. If you are weighing up hiking and cycling, this trail offers a specific option for the latter.
The Igualeja Via Ferrata is in the Valle del Genal, near the source of the Río Genal. Its sections are mostly horizontal, but also include some athletic passages. Its horizontal layout does not mean that all sections are alike. Check availability before making plans.
Townscape and Architectural History
El Albaicín is Igualeja’s old quarter. Its winding streets and whitewashed houses shape the townscape; the stone walls of the houses rest on the rock. Alongside individual religious buildings, the street layout, façades and the way the walls sit on the rock all contribute to the character of the quarter.
The Iglesia de Santa Rosa de Lima is a Mudéjar temple. It was built in 1505 at the behest of the Archbishop of Seville, Diego de Deza, on the site of a former mosque; its minaret was retained as a tower. The Ermita del Divino Pastor is an 18th-century chapel with a trapezoidal floor plan in the Andalusian Baroque style. These buildings offer different architectural points of reference: on the one hand, a specific construction date and a preserved tower; on the other, a floor plan and Baroque style.
Festivals and Chestnut Season
Igualeja’s patron saint festivals take place from 29 August to 2 September in honour of San Gregorio Magno and Santa Rosa de Lima. If you want to plan your trip around this period, check the programme for the relevant year. Igualeja also celebrates the so-called “Toro de Fuego” festival.
During the pasos of Holy Week, scenes from the Passion are depicted with elaborate costumes and decorations; more than 60 people take part. The chestnut harvest begins in late September and early October, and the pilonga chestnut is the main variety. The patron saint festivals and the start of the harvest therefore offer different seasonal planning cues: the festivals take place in early September, while the harvest begins later in autumn.
