Sayalonga offers different ways to experience its culture and landscape: the Cementerio Redondo stands out for its circular shape, while trails take in viewpoints, the course of the Río Cájula or old irrigation channels. There is also a chapel with an 18th-century image, the Museo Morisco and a soup dish typical of Sayalonga. This gives you a choice of architectural and cultural history, routes and local cuisine when planning your trip.

The Cementerio Redondo and its architecture

At the entrance to the Cementerio Redondo de Sayalonga is the Centro de Interpretación del Cementerio Redondo de Sayalonga. The cemetery is notable for its vernacular architecture and is probably one of the few circular cemeteries in Spain. Its circular shape and architecture give this place a distinctive character. With the interpretation centre right at the entrance, the cemetery and the information about it form a connected cultural attraction.

Chapel, museum and murals

The Ermita de San Cayetano was probably built in the 16th century. The chapel houses an image of San Cayetano dating from the 18th century, which is of considerable artistic value. The building and the image therefore belong to different centuries, providing a specific timeframe for understanding the site. The Museo Morisco provides visitors with information about aspects of the area’s heritage, culture and history.

Murals also tell the story of the area: the Ruta de los Murales takes you to murals at important locations around the town; their illustrations offer insights into its history. Here, history can be encountered both in the museum and in images at various important locations.

Routes with different points of interest

The Ruta de los Miradores Turísticos leads to viewpoints in Sayalonga and Corumbela. Another route starts in Sayalonga, passes over the Río Cájula and through the rural area of El Molino, and continues to Corumbela; it is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Corumbela plays a different role on these two routes: the Miradores route leads to viewpoints in both places, while on the other route Corumbela is the destination after the stretch via the Río Cájula and El Molino.

The Ruta de las Acequias Árabes follows the municipality’s old Arab irrigation channels along the river. Its focus is therefore on historic irrigation. Together with the viewpoints and the route to Corumbela, this offers a choice of different themes rather than just one type of route.

Local cuisine and finding accommodation

Cachorreñas is a soup typical of Sayalonga, making it a specific culinary highlight to consider when planning your trip. Bodegas Bentomiz is located at Finca El Almendro, Pago Cuesta Robano, in Sayalonga.

When looking for a hotel in Sayalonga, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: are you most interested in cultural history, in viewpoints, or in planning a route suitable for hiking and mountain biking?
