A Sunday among blossoming almond groves is a memorable reason to travel to Guaro: at the DĂa del Almendro, held annually at the end of January, guided walks through the groves include explanations of the landscape and vegetation. Two routes offer different levels of difficulty: an easier one for families and a more challenging one for those seeking a greater challenge. The exact Sunday varies from year to year; route details may also change with each edition. So, if you are planning your trip around the event, check the date and programme beforehand.

Festivals and local cuisine

The Festival de Gastronomía features dishes such as conejo a la almendra, caldereta de chivo and galipuche. The latter is a local soup from Guaro. The festival also includes a food trail through the town’s bars and restaurants. Artisans and traders offer honey, olive oil, olives and cured meats, as well as esparto crafts and ceramics. The selection of dishes may vary with each edition, and individual vendors may change.

The Romería de San Isidro combines a religious procession with a communal meal. The procession route begins at the Fuente de San Isidro in the historic town centre and leads to the saint’s chapel on the banks of the Río Grande. On Sunday, a large paella is prepared for all participants at the Alameda de San Isidro. The exact date of this annual celebration varies; the food on offer may also change.

The two-day Festival de la Luna Flamenca showcases the art of flamenco through a range of performances. They take place in different squares in the historic town centre; Saturday’s programme includes performances at the Auditorio de la Luna Mora. Venues, performers and the programme may change from one edition to the next.

Two more festivals in December offer specific dates to help you plan. Las Mayordomas is celebrated on 7 and 8 December in honour of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción; the tradition dates back to 1854. The celebrations conclude with a procession of the image of the Virgin, accompanied by the Mayordomas, Guaro residents and numerous visitors. The Belén Viviente is held on 21 December in the Plaza de la Constitución. Around 40 people from Guaro take part; the number may vary.

Hiking, cycling and scenery

The Guaro–Puerto Alto route passes between almond trees and along the bed of the Arroyo Seco. It then climbs to viewpoints overlooking the Sierra de las Nieves and Torrecilla, the highest peak in Málaga province. The Guaro–Chiribenítez hiking trail passes old cortijos and natural viewpoints. The route between Guaro and Monda forms part of the Gran Senda de Málaga. The features described for each route can help you find your way: viewpoints and a stream bed on one, old cortijos on the other.

Guaro also has mountain biking routes. They cross hills, dirt tracks and historic paths. Before setting out on a hike, check current trail conditions locally; the same applies to conditions and signage for cycling routes.

Guaro is part of the Sierra de las Nieves UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The RĂo Grande is considered a birdwatching area in Guaro and, with its water and vegetation, forms a natural corridor that provides shelter for a wide variety of species. This landscape offers a different reason to visit alongside the festival dates: if you are coming for a celebration, plan around the event calendar; for hiking and cycling, take current trail conditions into account.

Getting there and planning your stay

The municipal agenda lists bus departures from Guaro to Coín, Marbella, Málaga and Alhaurín el Grande. Check departure times before your trip, as timetables may change. If a festival is the reason for your stay, plan your travel dates around the specific event date. If hiking or cycling is your priority, it is worth checking trail conditions locally before setting your dates.
