Alhaurin El Grande combines historic buildings, cultural events, local food and natural attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding first what you would like to focus on: would you like to get to know the town mainly through its architecture, a festival, or the landscape and outdoor activities? The following highlights offer specific points to help you make that decision and find suitable accommodation.

Church, architecture and culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Its history as a parish church dates back to the town’s incorporation into Christian rule during the campaign of 1485. Its present-day appearance is shaped above all by 19th-century alterations in the Neoclassical style. This makes it a building that connects the town’s history with a distinctly later architectural influence.

The Antonio Gala House Museum, La Baltasara, preserves rural architecture from 19th-century Málaga. It also hosts dramatic guided tours, literary conferences, concerts and workshops. Visitors interested in literary and artistic events as well as architectural history will find a different cultural focus here. Cuevas del Convento is also among the most interesting architectural landmarks in Alhaurin El Grande.

Castillo de Fahala and historic mills

The medieval Castillo de Fahala stands on a two-hectare plateau-like hill and offers sweeping views over large parts of the Guadalhorce Valley. At the foot of the castle are three watermills from the same period.

The Molino Morisco de los Corchos dates from the 15th or 16th century and is one of the few surviving examples of traditional watermills in Málaga province. The mill stands on the banks of the Fahala River, whose water powers the milling process. It also offers a practical illustration of the connection between river water and traditional milling technology.

The riparian woodland at the Molino Morisco de los Corchos provides a habitat for many species. These include the purple heron, squacco heron, little bittern and golden oriole; the species present may vary depending on the season. For nature lovers, this offers a different perspective on the mill landscape than its architectural history, with habitats and wildlife diversity taking centre stage.

Sierra de Mijas and outdoor activities

The northern side of the Sierra de Mijas offers impressive views of the Guadalhorce Valley and the Costa del Sol from Alhaurin El Grande. The area is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. Alhaurin El Grande is also well suited to hiking, cycling and outdoor activities. The views, biodiversity and opportunities to get active outdoors are all reasons to include the landscape in your travel plans.

Festivals and local food

The Semana Santa de Alhaurín el Grande is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía. It includes a live re-enactment of the Passion of Jesus. The annual San Isidro Labrador festival also has a culinary element: its programme includes tastings of cachorreña and mojete, typical dishes from Alhaurin El Grande. The Fiesta de la Cachorreña is recognised as a Fiesta de Singularidad Turística Provincial.

A bread-themed offering combines guided tours with a journey through the history of bread, from the time of the Egyptians onwards. It also includes breakfast and a hands-on workshop. The culinary experiences therefore take a range of forms: tastings at an annual festival, dishes with local connections, and an activity focused on the history of bread and hands-on participation.

Planning information

The Oficina Municipal de Turismo is located in the town’s bus station or bus stop premises. You can plan your travel dates around the occasion you wish to attend and decide whether architecture, local food or nature experiences will shape your stay.
