Visitors who want to get to know Istán through its water-related sites will find a fitting thematic introduction at the Museo y Centro de Interpretación del Agua. The museum is dedicated to water culture and explains the importance of water to life and human development. Together with the hiking and cycling routes and historic sites, it offers a multifaceted picture of the themes you can include in your travel plans.
Water culture and places by the water
The museum has a visitor reception centre with an exhibition area, touchscreens and audio guides. The audio guide narratives have been translated into English. This allows you to experience the museum through different forms of interpretation without requiring you to follow a specific route.
The Istán information point provides visitor information in Spanish, English and French. It also offers guided tours of the Moorish Springs and irrigation channels, the Museo y Centro de Interpretación del Agua, the Paraje del Coto and the Árbol de los Abrazos. If you would like to explore several of these topics, you can find out about the guided tours there.
The Embalse de la Concepción is another local water feature: it lies on the Río Verde de Istán. Another specific site is the Fuente y lavadero El Chorro complex. It includes a drinking-water fountain with seven spouts. Its water flows over a small waterfall to the area where laundry was once washed.
Hiking and cycling routes
The PR-A 280 is an officially approved and signposted hiking trail that can be walked and is 6.7 kilometres long. It starts at Plaza del Cha in Istán, passes through orchards as far as the crossing of the Río Molinos, and continues to Charco del Canalón in the Río Verde valley. Trail conditions and crossings may vary seasonally; take this into account when planning and check the current situation before setting out.
Another route with a different point of interest is the PR-A 140 from Marbella to Istán. It crosses the municipal boundary: the trail runs from the municipality of Marbella into that of Istán. Alongside the signposted hiking option, this route is specifically described as crossing between the two municipal areas.
For a cycling route, the Ruta Bici Istán-Castaño Santo is a distinct option: it runs from Istán to the Castaño Santo. The tree in Istán is exceptionally large; it is probably about 800 years old. Its trunk measures up to 15 metres in circumference at a height of 1.30 metres, and up to 22 metres at the base. These measurements refer to different points on the tree and convey its size in concrete terms.
Church, tower and local history
The parish church of San Miguel is considered Istán’s oldest and most important monument. It was built in the early 16th century and remodelled twice; the most recent remodelling took place in 1996. Its history therefore spans from the early 16th century to a much later alteration that can be dated precisely.
The Torre de Escalante stands in the town centre. It is designated as an Asset of Cultural Interest and may once have been a Nasrid watchtower. This interpretation remains tentative: its possible former function is distinct from its confirmed designation as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Istán’s Holy Week also includes the performance of El Paso. It takes place between Maundy Thursday and Holy Saturday.
Festivals and regional cuisine
The Romería de San Miguel, locally also known as Tomillería, takes place on the Sunday before 29 September. As the exact date changes each year, it is advisable to check the date locally before travelling. This will help you plan a stay around the festival.
The Muestra Gastronómica y Día de la Naranja takes place in spring. It features traditional dishes made with local specialities, as well as orange juice. At the same time, the Ruta de la Tapa takes place, with the town’s bars and restaurants serving their specialities. The annual programme for these events should also be checked locally before your arrival. The festival dates thus add a seasonal culinary occasion to the hiking, water and cultural themes.
