The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista, a historic irrigation wheel and the purple carrot offer three specific perspectives on Cuevas Bajas. Church and local history, festivals and the Genil River landscape provide different focuses for planning a trip.

Church, Water Management and Local History

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista stands in a square in the town centre. The present-day church dates from the first half of the 18th century and was built over a smaller earlier church. Three naves are separated by round arches resting on sturdy pillars. The Capilla del Sagrario is located on the left side and is considered an unusual feature of the building. Its construction date, predecessor church and interior layout make it a clear stop for anyone interested in the town’s architectural history.

The Noria de la Agusadera offers a different historical connection. This 19th-century irrigation waterwheel drew water from the Genil in the La Agusadera area and is part of the Soto del Río Genil landscape. It shifts the focus from church architecture to the area’s former irrigation system and the riverside landscape. A sign more than 15 metres long welcomes visitors to Cuevas Bajas on Calle Archidona. The Hornos del Cedrón are also included in Cuevas Bajas’s list of historic monuments.

The hamlets of El CedrĂłn and La Moheda preserve further local history. El CedrĂłn is of Jewish origin and has a recently restored communal oven; check the current access arrangements locally. La Moheda is of Moorish origin and has an old public fountain along the path. Check its condition locally.

Festivals and Local Specialties

Holy Week in Cuevas Bajas has antecedents dating back to the 17th century. Processions take place on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The San Marcos festival on 25 April includes the custom known as “Atar al diablo” (“tying up the devil”), in which a knot is tied around a jaramago plant. San Marcos traditions also include tortas de aceite and Hornazo, a ring-shaped bread with an egg baked inside. The San Juan festival features a pilgrimage among the poplar groves along the Genil and a traditional paella meal; specific programme details may vary.

The two festivals celebrating the purple carrot also bring different seasonal highlights. The Zanahoria Morá celebration takes place every year on the first Sunday in December. It includes activities for children, as well as food, music and cultural events; individual activities may change. The Fiesta del Agua y la Siembra takes place every year in the last week of July and marks the sowing season for Cuevas Bajas’s distinctive purple carrot.

Resoli, a traditional drink made with aguardiente, coffee, sugar, cinnamon, lemon peel and lemon verbena, is part of the local flavour. Family recipes vary and are passed down through generations. Along with tortas de aceite, Hornazo and the traditional paella meal, Resoli shows that the local food culture is not limited to a single festival.

Routes, Landscape and Activities on the Genil

La ruta de la fuente connects Fuente del Pilar with Fuente del Botijo and leads to important sights and local traditions in Cuevas Bajas. As signposting and access conditions can change, check them before setting out. For nature enthusiasts, the older tourism guide “Aves y Paisajes” describes a 3,100-metre linear route rated as easy. It passes through riverside vegetation, scrubland, olive groves and cereal fields, and includes a birdwatching point near Lago de los Fernández. Check current route conditions and, locally, the condition of the facilities at the observation point. A section of the trail with both flat and downhill stretches is suitable for family outings.

Rafting on the Genil is also associated with Cuevas Bajas: the meeting point and the section of river used for the activity are in the town. The recommended season begins in April; the river has more water in summer. As river conditions depend on water flow and providers and booking arrangements may change, check the latest information in advance.
